Rug washing Oakey, out on the western Downs
Named for its own trees, surveyed in 1868
Oakey and the creek beside it were named for the river oaks that lined the creek banks, which is about as plain and local as a name gets. The town was surveyed in 1868 and the first land sale was held on 28 June 1870, though the railway had already arrived in 1867, ahead of the survey. The post office opened on 1 June 1869 as Oakey Creek Post Office and had been shortened to Oakey by 1878. The spelling stayed Oaky until the present form was officially adopted in August 1940, which is a surprisingly recent date for a town more than seventy years old by then. Today Oakey covers 127.1 square kilometres and holds 4,756 people, having gone 4,529 in 2011 and 4,705 in 2016. That is a town, not a fringe of anywhere else, and we treat it accordingly.
Twenty eight kilometres out from the city is not a reason to be a lower priority. It is a reason to be on a proper schedule instead of squeezed in when a van has room.
The institutions a real town has
Oakey State School opened on 10 August 1874 and marked its centenary in 1974, so the town has been schooling its own children for a hundred and fifty years. Oakey State High School has run since 28 January 1964 and St Monica's Catholic School serves alongside them. The Scots Presbyterian Church dates from 1906 and St Monica's Catholic Church opened on 14 February 1909. The war memorial in Campbell Street was unveiled on 28 August 1922 by the Queensland Governor, Sir Matthew Nathan, which is not a small thing for a Downs town to have arranged. The Oakey Army Aviation Centre works out of Oakey Airport with the Museum of Army Aviation on site, and the University of Queensland runs its Equine Studies campus here. That is a lot of institution for under five thousand people, and it explains why the housing stock holds families for generations rather than turning over.
The longest leg on the schedule, and why it is scheduled
Oakey sits twenty eight kilometres northwest of the Toowoomba CBD, which puts it somewhere between a hundred and fifty and a hundred and sixty kilometres from our wash floor, or a bit over two hours of driving each way. There is no sensible way to service that on demand, and we do not pretend otherwise. What we do instead is run a scheduled western leg that takes in Jondaryan, Kingsthorpe, Gowrie Junction, Bowenville and Wellcamp along with Oakey, so a full van makes the trip rather than a half empty one making it twice. For the customer that means two things. Pickup and delivery cost nothing, because the distance is absorbed into how the run is planned rather than added to a bill. And the timing is set once the day's route is fixed, so we can tell you the day well ahead but not the hour until the run is loaded. Pet Stain and Odour
Working dogs that come inside at knock-off, and the town cat that has claimed one corner of one rug permanently.
A working dog produces volume, and volume goes straight through to the backing where nothing applied on top can follow it down. The wash reaches that layer, enzymes handle what the wash leaves behind, and the drying room finishes the job. People who have already tried three supermarket products are usually surprised how completely it goes.

Odour Removal

An odour is a physical thing sitting in the weave, and while it is there the room will keep smelling of it. Washing removes the material itself and takes it off the property, and how much comes out is obvious in the rinse. We add nothing scented afterwards, because perfume across a loaded rug helps nobody.

Rug Spot Cleaning
New damage on a rug that is otherwise sound does not automatically justify a trip of a hundred and sixty kilometres each way.
Almost everybody scrubs, and scrubbing is exactly what turns a small mark into a permanent one. The wool stops lying as woven, the mark widens beyond where it landed, and a pale patch is left behind for good. We test, use very little pressure, comb the fibre back into line, and say plainly if the bath is the only answer.
