Lakeside International Raceway opened on 19 March 1961 on the shore of Lake Kurwongbah, built by the Queensland Motor Sporting Club. The Australian Grand Prix ran here in 1966 and 1969, the touring car championship visited 29 times between 1964 and 1998, and after closing in mid-2001 the circuit reopened on 5 April 2008 as Lakeside Park, still racing on the same 2.4 kilometre ribbon.

Kurwongbah is said to be the Kabi name for Sideling Creek, meaning black duck, and the suburb acquired it in the most local way imaginable: a newspaper competition in 1958, the year after the dam went in and the new lake country needed something to call itself. The ducks are still on the water, apparently satisfied with the outcome.
