An honest description of the suburb
Larapinta is 6.0 square kilometres of working ground about 23 kilometres south-south-west of the city, and it would be dishonest to describe it as a residential suburb. The 2021 census recorded no people or very close to none living here, because the land belongs to warehouses, hardstand and truck movements, with a handful of rural-residential holdouts near the creek. That does not make it a suburb without rugs. It makes it a suburb whose rugs sit in reception areas, showrooms, meeting rooms and lunchrooms, and whose household work comes from the estates that ring it in Heathwood, Hillcrest, Pallara and Parkinson. Larapinta takes its name from Oxley Creek on its boundary.
Flowing water happens to be our trade as well. Every rug we collect goes fully under at our Yatala facility, is worked by hand, and is dried right through before it comes back.
Larapinta was established in 1970 and its name is recorded as meaning flowing water, chosen for Oxley Creek, which wraps around the northern and western edges of the suburb. The creek is the oldest thing here and also the most altered: decades of sand mining changed its course through this stretch. The name has a better-known cousin in the Northern Territory, but this Larapinta is entirely its own place, built where the creek flats meet the motorway.

The Glider Forest Conservation Area protects bushland across the southern end of the suburb, holding a line of habitat between the industrial estates and the acreage country beyond. Is it cheaper to wash a tired reception rug or replace it?
Washing wins by a long way in most cases, and where it does not, you are told so during the assessment rather than afterwards. A rug gone flat and grey with dock grit usually still holds good colour underneath, because the problem is soil rather than lost fibre. Once the soil is out, the pattern reads clearly again.
