A small town, stated plainly
Grantham is a small Lockyer Valley farming town about 100 kilometres west of Brisbane, 29.4 kilometres east of Toowoomba and 9.8 kilometres west-southwest of Gatton. The 2021 census counted 796 residents, and there is no point dressing that up: this is a town of farmhouses, workers' cottages and a modest spread of blocks, held by farming families and by people who wanted valley quiet at a country price. The Warrego Highway runs through from east to west, the Lockyer State Forest sits up in the northwest corner, and the flats around town grow a good share of the vegetables the valley is known for. The rugs match the houses. Wool in the good room, tough synthetics where the boots come in, and now and then an inherited piece that arrived from a Toowoomba or Brisbane household.

Hot dry months, then a shut-up winter
Weather this far inland runs hotter and drier than the coast through summer, then turns genuinely cold once the sun goes down in winter. That swing is harder on a rug than most owners realise. Through the dry months, dust and pollen off the paddocks ride in on any breeze going and work steadily down into the pile, and because it happens a little at a time nobody can point to the week the rug started looking tired. Then the cold sets in, a house closes up for a fortnight at a time, and wool quietly picks up the flat note that goes with a shut room. Neither of those problems lives at the surface, which is why neither answers to a vacuum or a spray. Water reaches both. Roughly 125 kilometres separates this town from our wash floor, which comes to 85 or 95 minutes depending on the traffic through Ipswich, and the route runs highway, then motorway, then the Yatala exit. Because of that, work here goes onto a scheduled valley trip instead of being promised for the same week, which is the honest version rather than the comfortable one. On that day the driving costs you nothing either way and the rug is taken rolled from the door. Pet Stain and Odour

Odour Removal

Where one area is the entire trouble and the rest of the rug is holding up, local work is the sensible answer. Dye tested first, drawn up in stages, then the pile combed back level.
Hard work is exactly the wrong instinct here. Pressure widens a mark while crushing the fibre beneath it, and the flattened patch that results draws far more attention than the original spill did. When local treatment will not finish the job, that is said upfront.

Rug Dry Cleaning

A run name, a siding and sixty-four years of butter
The kind of working history a farming town is made of.
An 1841 pastoral run gave the town its name.
A name that has held since 1841 suits a trade that still works the old way. We wash rugs by hand, and the method has lasted for the same reason the name did, which is that it works.
George Mocatta took up a pastoral run on this part of the valley in 1841 and called it Grantham, and the run's name outlasted the run itself. When a town grew up on the flats it simply kept the name the district already answered to, and it has been Grantham ever since, making it one of the oldest names anywhere in the Lockyer.
A railway siding opened here in 1866, a station followed in the mid-1870s.
Our pickup arrangement works much the way the old siding did: a scheduled stop, goods collected at the door, and everything carried carefully through to where the real work gets done.
The main line west reached this part of the valley early, and a siding opened at Grantham in 1866, only a year after Queensland's first trains ran. A proper station followed in the mid-1870s, and for a century that platform was where the district's farm produce began its journey east. The highway does that work now, but the line still runs through town.
A butter factory worked here from 1907 to 1971.

Grantham's butter factory opened in 1907, in the years when Lockyer dairy farms sent their cream into town by cart. The business did well enough that a brick building replaced the original in 1926, and the factory kept working until 1971, which comes to sixty-four years of valley dairying inside one set of walls. It is exactly the kind of quiet working history this town is made of.

Usually, provided the work reaches as far down as the urine went, which is the base of the rug. Nothing sprayed on top gets that far, and that is exactly why the smell keeps coming back once the weather warms. Full immersion carries the residue out, enzymes handle the remainder, and complete drying leaves nothing behind.
Do you collect from Gatton and Helidon on the same trip?

How much dust is actually in a farmhouse rug?
More than almost anyone guesses. A large wool piece off a valley property can be carrying several kilograms of fine soil in its foundation while still reading as nothing worse than tired on top. That is why the dry stage always comes before any water, since wetting loose soil first would simply turn it into mud.
