Before 1902 this district answered to two of the least romantic names in Queensland: The Six Mile, and the railway survey label 36 miles 68 chains. On 20 September 1902 it officially became Elimbah, drawn from the Kabi people's name for the area, the place of the grey water snake. It is hard to imagine a better trade: a chain measurement swapped for a name the country had carried for thousands of years.

The Elimbah Soldiers Memorial Hall was dedicated on 25 April 1922, built by a small farming community determined to honour its returned servicemen with something both permanent and useful. A century later it still does both jobs, standing as the district's memorial and working as its gathering place, the kind of hall rural Queensland built once and has looked after ever since.

Elimbah State School opened on 3 November 1915 and was officially inaugurated on Australia Day 1916, in the middle of the First World War, when the district was small farms and timber country. It has taught the primary years ever since, more than a century of one school serving one district, with high schoolers making the run into Caboolture. Across a hundred square kilometres, the school gate is still where the community actually meets.

Years of dog urine have built up in the front-room wool. Is it past saving?
