Wacol sprawls across 18.2 square kilometres with the Brisbane River running its whole western side, and only a fraction of that ground is houses: 4,253 residents at the 2021 census share the suburb with industrial estates, distribution yards and institutional land, plus two railway stations of its own sitting on the Ipswich line. Three chapters of honest Wacol history
The suburb's stories are working stories, and they hold up well.
Wacol is a coined railway word, and it says exactly what the station did.
A name built from plain work suits us. Our trade is equally plain: collect the rug, weigh up its condition honestly, wash it by hand, bring it back.
The railway reached this stretch of the river flats early: Wolston station opened on 8 October 1874 on the line to Ipswich. On 8 July 1927 it was renamed Wacol, a coined word from "weigh coal", after the weighbridge work the station did on the coal trains rolling through. Few Australian suburbs wear such an honest job description for a name; the suburb simply took the station's.
A riverside farmhouse begun in 1852, held by the National Trust since 1963.
The Trust keeps a 170-year-old farmhouse alive through patient, correct maintenance. Old rugs answer to the same philosophy: gentle hand washing at the correct pH brings them back without harm.
Dr Stephen Simpson, who had been Crown Commissioner of Lands in the 1840s, began building Wolston Farmhouse in 1852 on a 640-acre riverside run, naming it for his Warwickshire birthplace. Matthew Goggs took the property in 1860 and bred horses and cattle; the Grindle family ran a dairy from 1906, supplying Brisbane until the 1930s and leaving their name on Grindle Road. The state resumed the land in 1960, the National Trust of Queensland acquired the farmhouse in 1963, and it opens to visitors on the first and third Sunday of each month, one of Brisbane's most intact windows into the 1850s.

Plenty of Brisbane families can trace their first Australian days to Wacol. Some still own rugs that made the journey with them, and we wash those with the care their history has earned.
In October 1942 the US Army built Camp Columbia on Wacol's open ground, and it grew into the headquarters of the Sixth US Army, with an officer candidate school and a general hospital on site. From July 1944 it housed the Netherlands East Indies government-in-exile, often described as the only foreign government ever seated on Australian soil. After the war the camp turned to gentler work: from 1949 to 1987 it served as a migrant reception centre, the first Australian address for thousands of new arrivals whose descendants are spread across Brisbane today. A heritage park now keeps the story.

How does pickup work from a fenced yard or dock?
Tell us the access arrangements on the booking form: gate codes, dock hours, the name at the counter. The driver follows the notes, collects the rolled rug and leaves everything as found. Returns run the same way, timed so someone is there to receive it.
Wacol is one of your longest runs. Does pickup still cost nothing?
It does. Collection and delivery ride the scheduled run free, long leg or not, because the van is passing anyway. The only costs on the invoice are for the washing itself, exactly as quoted at inspection.
Can a reception rug be turned around faster than a week?
Yes. The 48-hour express exists for exactly that, at additional cost, and suits fit-outs, audits and events. The standard cycle takes about a week door to door, and both paths finish with the rug dried completely through.
