Rug washing Yeerongpilly, riverside and rebuilt
Two thousand people between a river and a creek
Yeerongpilly sits 8.5 kilometres south-west of the Brisbane GPO, a small riverside suburb of 2,033 residents at the 2021 census. The Brisbane River touches its northern boundary and Oxley Creek runs along a short stretch of its western edge, with Fairfield Road carrying the traffic through the middle. It is a compact place with an unusual split down the middle of its housing: old railway-suburb stock on one side, and a brand new village filling the old research-institute site on the other. That gives us two quite different collections from one small suburb, and one stop off Fairfield Road generally covers both.
Building dust is the most damaging thing a new rug ever meets. Sharp, invisible, and already at the foundation.
Worked-on cottages and polished concrete
The original streets hold timber workers' cottages and post-war homes that have been renovated hard over the past two decades, and the rugs in them are usually inherited wool, older than the kitchen and often older than the current owner. Over at Yeerongpilly Green the apartments and terrace homes run polished concrete and timber floors, and the rugs there were bought new to soften them. The new ones have the more urgent problem. A rug delivered into a building still finishing its fit-out picks up fine construction grit in its first months, and that grit is angular enough to cut fibre with every crossing of the room.
Water on two sides, damp that lingers
With a river along one boundary and a creek along another, the damp here outstays every wet spell. Low ground beside the creek keeps morning moisture well into the day, and wool sitting in a closed-up cottage absorbs that cycle season after season until the smell is the first thing a visitor notices. Newer buildings are not exempt either; a slab floor stays cool and condensation collects underneath a rug where nobody looks. An immersion wash at the Yatala wash floor strips out the built-up damp smell and the grime holding it, and the drying under control room sends every rug home genuinely dry rather than merely dry on top.
One habit is worth adopting in a brand new home. Wash the rug once inside its first eighteen months, then settle into the usual cycle. It feels early and it is not, because that first wash takes out the construction grit before it has cut the pile, and the difference in how the rug looks at year ten is considerable. It is the cheapest thing anyone can do to protect a rug they have only just paid for.

The route a Yeerongpilly rug takes
You do not make that trip. Yeerongpilly sits on a southside circuit we run most days, pickup and delivery are included, and a window follows once the route is built.
A name about rain, a junction with three names, and a science campus reborn
A small suburb that has quietly changed identity more than once.
An Aboriginal name recorded by Tom Petrie, with more than one telling.
A name about rain suits our trade. Water ruins rugs and water saves them, and the difference is doing the washing properly and the drying completely.
According to Thomas Petrie, Yeerongpilly comes from an Aboriginal word meaning rain coming. Other records trace it to yurong for rain or yarung for sandy or gravelly ground, joined to pilly, a gully or watercourse. Every version keeps the water, which is fitting for a suburb written between the Brisbane River and Oxley Creek, where the weather still announces itself across the water first.
Opened 1884 as Logan Junction, then South Coast Junction, then Yeerongpilly.
This has been a place where routes meet since 1884, and our southside pickup run still works the same way. One detour off Fairfield Road collects the whole suburb.
The railway station here opened in 1884 as Logan Junction, was renamed South Coast Junction in 1885, and finally took the suburb's name in 1893. For well over a century it was the point where the line to Corinda split from the main southern line, a working junction until the Corinda passenger service ended in June 2011. The station has since been rebuilt from the ground up, reopening in February 2025 as part of the Cross River Rail works.
A century-old government research site reborn as a riverside village.
New apartments mean new rugs on hard floors, and the heritage streets around them hold the old wool ones. We wash both properly, and one pickup covers the suburb.
From 1909 the site beside Fairfield Road housed the Queensland Government's animal health science campus, beginning as the Stock Experiment Station and growing into the Animal Research Institute, described as the oldest facility of its kind in Queensland. The campus closed around 2010 and its heritage-listed buildings now anchor Yeerongpilly Green, a 14-hectare village development whose first shops opened in August 2023.

Yeerongpilly questions, old rugs and new
How much does rug cleaning in Yeerongpilly cost?
The rug decides. Size, fibre and condition are read before any figure is quoted. The price is then fixed. Pickup and delivery come with the southside circuit, and a rug not worth washing professionally is flagged before the job is booked.
Our rug is only a year old. Does it really need washing already?
Very likely yes, if it went into a new or recently renovated home. Construction dust is fine, sharp and heavy, and it works straight down to the foundation where every footstep grinds it against the fibre. Getting it out early is the best single thing you can do for a young rug, and it costs far less than replacing worn pile later.
Are there schools in the suburb we should mention for collection timing?
There are none inside Yeerongpilly itself; the nearest primary schooling is over in Yeronga. It makes very little difference to us, since collections here are scheduled around your day rather than around the traffic. Tell us a window that suits and the driver works to it.
Is there a quicker turnaround than the usual week?
Yes. Express handling within 48 hours is available at extra cost when a move or an inspection sets the date. The normal run is about 7 days, and drying is never trimmed, because a rug going onto concrete has to be dry at the base.
The dog has urinated on a wool rug in a closed-up cottage. Will the smell go?
Yes, once the source is removed. Urine settles in the backing and keeps producing odour there, and the damp air near the river keeps reactivating it. Water working through the base takes that residue with it and enzymes settle whatever the rinse missed, then thorough drying stops the cycle starting again.
Do you also collect from Yeronga, Annerley and Moorooka?
Yes, and from Fairfield, Rocklea and Tarragindi on the same circuit. Neighbours can share a collection day easily, and $20 comes off each additional rug, so it is worth checking whether anyone nearby is due at the same time.
