Wiped off the map, then restored

Rug washing Stones Corner cannot do at home

Six hundred metres square, and back on the map

Stones Corner is a pocket suburb of just 0.6 square kilometres about 5.7 kilometres south-south-east of the city centre, centred on the junction of Logan Road and Old Cleveland Road, with 2,336 residents at the 2021 census. It has led two lives on the map: absorbed into Greenslopes in 1975, then officially restored as a suburb in its own right in November 2017. It also sits at the inner-city end of this run, and pretending otherwise would be silly. Our southside route simply starts near town, which means collections here are scheduled with the whole day's driving in mind rather than squeezed in.

There is no yard, no line and nowhere to lay a rug flat. That is the entire reason a driver exists.

Apartments, cottages and rugs chosen on purpose

The housing is apartments and unit blocks along the ridgelines, with workers' cottages and renovated timber homes in the side streets, and one of the inner south's youngest populations living in all of it. The rugs match. These are chosen pieces rather than inherited defaults: designer wool sized for a unit, flatweaves and kilims picked up from the strip's shopfronts, the occasional Persian that came with a grandparent's estate into a renovated cottage. Small-space living then concentrates every bit of traffic onto them. One rug in a two-bedroom apartment absorbs what three or four rugs would share in a suburban house, and it does it on a concrete slab with no air underneath.

Slabs, still air and a humid city

Apartment living is genuinely hard on rugs in this climate. Airflow is limited, windows stay shut through the worst of the humidity, and a rug lying on a slab never gets the chance to dry out from below. Moisture from a whole wet season accumulates in the base of the pile with the soil already sitting there, and by May the rug smells faintly of February. Cleaning it at home is close to impossible: there is nowhere to lay it flat, nowhere to dry it, and a wet rug on a balcony is a mildew experiment. A complete bath on our Yatala floor handles the whole thing, and the controlled drying means it goes back onto that slab genuinely dry.

There is a practical detail specific to unit living. Anything we collect from a building has to come back out through the door it went in, and rugs sized for apartments almost always do, but the occasional oversized piece bought for a larger home and carried into a smaller one can be awkward. Tell us the access when you book, lift or stairs, and the driver plans for it instead of discovering it on the day.

Rug Cleaning Stones Corner

The entire job happens off site, which is rather the point. Loose soil is taken out on the bench, the rug is bathed by hand in the Yatala tubs, and it is dried in a room built for the purpose before it comes back up the hill.

The practical problem in an apartment is not knowing what to do, it is having nowhere to do it. There is no yard, no line and no space to lay a rug flat. We solve that by taking the whole job away. About a week from collection to delivery, quoted once at the inspection.

  • The whole job done off site
  • No yard or line required
  • Quoted once at inspection

Rug Washing Stones Corner

Designer wool, flatweaves and vintage finds are all submerged, worked by hand at a pH picked for the weave, and rinsed until nothing further comes away from the structure.

Flatweaves and kilims need different handling from a plush pile, because there is no depth to hide behind and every part of the structure is visible. They are washed with less agitation and more support, and dried flat so the weave does not distort. It is slower work and it shows in the result.

  • Flatweaves dried flat, not hung
  • Less agitation, more support
  • Rinsed until nothing more lifts
Most popular

Stain Removal

Red wine in a small living room, coffee near the desk, oil from a takeaway container that did not survive the trip up the stairs.

Vintage pieces are the ones to be careful with, because their dyes are often older than anybody's records and behave unpredictably in water. We test in an unseen corner before anything else happens, treat with the gentlest effective option, and tell you honestly what the ceiling on that mark is.

  • Old dyes tested first
  • Gentlest option that works
  • Honest ceiling on each mark

Pet Stain and Odour

A cat or a small dog in a unit means an accident lands on the one soft surface in the place, and it goes straight through to the backing.

In a small apartment there is nowhere for that smell to go, so it becomes the smell of the whole home within days. A full soak washes the residue out of the backing, the enzyme stage deals with the rest, and complete drying means nothing returns when the humidity climbs.

  • One rug, one very small room
  • Flushed, then neutralised
  • Nothing left to come back

Odour Removal

The shut-in note a unit develops over a humid summer, held by the rug because it is the only absorbent thing in the room.

Apartments run on limited airflow, and a rug lying on a concrete slab never dries out underneath. That combination lets soil and moisture sit together in the base of the pile for months, which is precisely what a stale smell is. The bath removes both, and the drying room removes what caused it.

  • Built for slab-floor apartments
  • Soil and moisture both removed
  • Dried where a balcony cannot

Rug Spot Cleaning

A single mark on a rug otherwise sound can usually be treated on its own, without the whole piece leaving the building.

On a flatweave this needs a light hand, since there is no pile to groom afterwards and any distortion in the weave stays visible. Where local treatment is safe it is the sensible option, and where it is not you get told plainly instead of being sold a wash you did not need.

  • Light hand on flatweaves
  • No distortion left behind
  • Never sold a wash you do not need

Rug Steam Cleaning

Extraction with hot water suits the machine made pieces taking the daily punishment: the runner by the front door, the mat under a desk chair, the hallway piece.

Small-space living means one or two rugs are effectively doing the job of a whole floor, and for machine made synthetics extraction is quick, effective and cheaper. It is kept away from anything hand knotted or vintage. The assessment decides which of your pieces belongs in which category.

  • For the daily-punishment pieces
  • Quick and cheaper where it suits
  • Kept off vintage and hand knots

Rug Dry Cleaning

Older pieces whose dyes will not hold, and fragile weaves that cannot take a tub at all, are cleaned dry with compounds instead.

Vintage buying is popular around here and it brings us some genuinely delicate rugs, occasionally with dyes that run at the first sign of water. The test settles it in minutes. Those pieces are then cleaned in sections with compounds, slowly, fully supported, and never submerged.

  • For genuinely fragile weaves
  • Settled by test in minutes
  • Supported, sectioned, never soaked

Water Damage Restoration

A leak from the unit above, a failed appliance hose, or water under a balcony door in a storm. On a slab the water has nowhere to drain.

Concrete holds moisture against a rug for far longer than a timber floor would, so a soaked apartment rug is on a shorter clock than most. Get it lifted and ring us with the details. The rug is on the bench at Yatala the same day, and the answer comes before any cost.

  • Slabs hold water against the rug
  • On the bench the same day
  • An answer before any cost

Mould Rug Cleaning

The bloom that shows up on the underside of a rug lying on a slab, and the musty patch behind a lounge pushed against an external wall.

Nearly all the apartment mould we see starts underneath, where the rug meets cold concrete and condensation collects. Nothing on top hints at it until the smell arrives. An immersion bath with antimicrobial treatment clears the growth along with its moisture supply, and the drying stage keeps it away.

  • Underside mould is the usual case
  • Antimicrobial wash and rinse
  • Dried thoroughly to keep it away

Rug Moth Treatment

Moth larvae need wool and stillness, and a rug under a couch in a small unit that never gets rearranged offers both in abundance.

Vintage wool is especially attractive to them, and a piece bought secondhand can arrive with an infestation already in progress. Treatment covers the eggs and the grubs together, washing takes the debris away, and any loss is shown honestly along with what repair would involve. Checking a secondhand find before it goes down is cheap insurance.

  • Secondhand pieces checked closely
  • Every life stage treated
  • Loss shown, repair explained

Stain Protection

Once the rug is clean and dry a clear finish is applied, so a spill beads up for a few seconds rather than sinking into the pile immediately.

When one rug is carrying an entire living space, protecting it is straightforward common sense. Colour and hand are left exactly as they were, and a glass tipped over during dinner becomes something you deal with using a cloth rather than something you book a service about.

  • Sensible when one rug does everything
  • Colour and feel unchanged
  • A cloth, not a booking

Three Stones Corner stories

A refused licence, a rebuilt grandstand, and a creek let back out

A suburb this small has no business having this much history.

James Stone's ginger beer corner

Refused a hotel licence in the 1870s, Stone sold ginger beer instead.

Stone made the best of an honest setback, which is roughly our trade too. We are straight about what a wash can achieve and what it cannot, then do the work properly at Yatala.

Langlands Park

The home ground of Brisbane Tigers rugby league, rebuilt in 2023.

Game-day households are hard on floors. We collect rugs from the streets around the ground on the southside run, and the driver lifts the rolled rug at your door.

Hanlon Park, Bur'uda

The concrete drain became a living waterway again in 2022.

Restoring something so it works the way it should is our whole trade. A proper immersion wash undoes years of walked-in city grime and the rug comes back completely dry.

No more room odour in Stones Corner
Our machine-made rug had a cat urine spot that kept coming back whenever the room warmed up. They were clear that old urine can be stubborn and did not promise magic. It is back under the coffee table instead of sitting in the garage. I also liked that it came back dry and ready to lay down, not with that damp smell rugs can get after a rushed clean. With kids using the hallway every day, I wanted the rug practical again.

Holiday rug refreshed in Stones Corner
The flatweave rug looked okay, but you could feel the fine sand through the fibres. The booking worked around our holiday-home timing. It looks brighter and feels much nicer to walk on. It was not treated like a normal carpet job, which is what I wanted for a rug with fine sand through the fibres. I was worried a normal carpet clean would be too rough for the flatweave rug.

Good to know

Stones Corner questions about small-space rugs

How much does rug cleaning in Stones Corner cost?

Size, weave and condition set the price between them, so the rug is read before any figure exists. The quote is then fixed. Collection and return are part of the job at this end of the run, and a rug that would not benefit is flagged before it is booked.

We live in an apartment with no yard. How does collection work?

Our driver comes to the door, lift or stairs, rolls the rug there and takes it away. Nothing needs to happen in your unit beyond moving the coffee table. It comes back the same way, dry through the base, so it goes straight back down onto the floor.

Can a flatweave or kilim be washed safely?

Yes, with the right handling. Flatweaves have no pile to hide behind, so they are washed with less agitation and dried flat rather than hung, which is what stops the weave distorting. It is slower work than a plush pile and the difference is visible in the finished piece.

Is there a quicker option than about a week?

There is. 48-hour express handling can be booked at an additional charge when a move or an inspection will not wait. The usual timeline runs about 7 days, and drying is never rushed, because a rug going onto a slab has to be genuinely dry.

Our cat has urinated on the one rug in the apartment. Can that be fixed?

Yes. Urine travels well past the pile and lodges in the backing, and in a small home with limited airflow that smell becomes the smell of the whole place. A full soak washes the residue away and the enzyme stage deals with the rest, then full drying stops it returning once the humidity climbs again.

Do you also collect from Greenslopes, Annerley and Coorparoo?

Yes, along with Holland Park, Fairfield and Tarragindi on the same day's driving. Friends or family nearby can share a collection, and a $20 saving on each extra rug is worth knowing about if two units in the same block are due.
