Wool rug shedding is normal, not a defect. It happens because short fibre ends left over from spinning and trimming work loose with everyday use. On a new rug it can last three to six months, then settles. Gentle, regular vacuuming and a quality underlay reduce it. It is not a sign your rug is poor quality.
Why Wool Rugs Shed (and Why It's Normal)
If your wool rug is leaving little tufts of fluff on the floor, don’t panic — this is completely normal, especially on a new rug. Wool is a natural staple fibre made of countless short strands spun together. During manufacturing and the final shearing of the pile, many tiny fibre ends are left loose within the weave. As you walk on the rug and vacuum it, those loose ends simply work their way to the surface and shed. This is called shedding or linting, and it is different from pilling (where fibres tangle into balls) or actual fibre loss. Shedding is purely cosmetic and does not weaken your rug. In fact, even premium hand-knotted wool rugs shed in their early life — the key sign of quality is that the shedding steadily reduces over time rather than continuing indefinitely. Construction matters too: hand-tufted wool rugs (where wool is punched through a backing and held with latex) tend to shed more at first than hand-knotted or flat-woven pieces, because the tufting process creates more cut fibre ends near the surface.
How Long Does Wool Rug Shedding Last?
For most new wool rugs, heavy shedding settles within three to six months of regular use, then tapers off to almost nothing. The exact timeline depends on how the rug is made. Hand-knotted and hand-loomed rugs usually stop shedding within one to three months because the pile is tightly secured. Hand-tufted rugs often shed for two to four months while the loose fibres near the latex backing release. Deep-pile and shag wool rugs can take the longest — up to six months — simply because there is more fibre to settle. After the first year, a quality wool rug should shed only minimally, perhaps a few fibres in high-traffic spots. If your rug is still shedding heavily after twelve months, or you notice clumps coming away, bald patches showing the backing, or the backing peeling, that points to a manufacturing fault or wear rather than normal break-in, and it is worth having the rug inspected by a specialist.
How to Reduce Wool Rug Shedding
You can’t stop shedding entirely on a new wool rug — it’s part of the fibre settling in — but you can manage it so it passes quickly. Vacuum gently and regularly: in the first few months, vacuum once or twice a week using suction only or a low setting, and avoid aggressive rotating beater bars that can tear loose extra fibre. Never vacuum the fringes. Use a quality rug underlay: a good pad cushions the pile against the floor, reduces friction and slows fibre release. Rotate the rug periodically so wear and traffic spread evenly. For a new rug shedding heavily, you can gently take it outside and lightly shake or beat it to release loose fibres faster. Avoid pulling at any tufts that stick up — snip them level with scissors instead of tugging. Most importantly, resist the urge to over-scrub or use harsh DIY methods, as these can damage wool and actually worsen fibre loss.
