Are Jute Rugs Hard to Clean?

Jute rugs aren't difficult to maintain, but they are easy to ruin. Jute is a water-sensitive plant fibre that browns, swells and weakens when soaked, so it can't be steam cleaned or shampooed like other rugs. Day-to-day care is simple dry maintenance — but deep cleaning, stains and odours are safest left to a specialist.

Why Jute Is Trickier Than Other Rugs

Jute is a natural plant fibre, and that’s exactly what makes it challenging. Unlike wool or synthetics, jute reacts badly to water. The fibres are highly absorbent and soak up moisture like a sponge, then swell, stiffen and become brittle as they dry. Worse, water draws out the natural oils inside the fibre, which oxidise and leave permanent brown stains — the dreaded ‘browning’ that’s almost impossible to reverse once it sets. Soak a jute rug and you also risk shrinkage, colour bleed from any backing or underlay, and mould or mildew if it doesn’t dry quickly. That’s why the usual rug-cleaning methods — steam cleaning, hosing down, shampooing or full immersion washing — are off the table for jute. The good news is that routine upkeep is genuinely easy; the difficulty only appears when a jute rug is heavily soiled, stained or wet, which is when professional judgement matters most.

How to Care for Jute at Home

For everyday maintenance, jute is low-fuss. Vacuum regularly using suction only — switch off the beater bar or rotating brush, which can fray and pull the weave. Vacuum both sides occasionally and take smaller rugs outside for a gentle shake to dislodge embedded grit. For spills, act fast and blot, never rub, using a clean white cloth to lift liquid before it sinks in. Keep moisture to an absolute minimum: a barely-damp cloth, then sprinkle dry baking soda or cornstarch over the area to absorb the rest, leave it 15 minutes and vacuum it up. Baking soda also freshens odours between cleans. Always dry any treated spot quickly with a fan or good airflow to head off browning and mildew. What you should never do is saturate the rug, steam clean it or pour cleaning solution directly onto the fibres — those are the actions that cause the irreversible damage jute is known for.

When to Call a Professional

Home care handles dust and the occasional fresh spill, but it can’t deep clean a jute rug. Embedded dirt works deep into the dense weave, and set-in stains, pet accidents, musty odours, existing brown water marks or any structural distortion are beyond a DIY blot. This is where a specialist earns their keep. At Premier Rug Cleaning we assess the fibre, dyes and condition first, then use controlled, fibre-appropriate low-moisture methods rather than the water-heavy washing that destroys jute. Crucially, we manage drying carefully so the rug is returned fully dry — never damp — which is the single biggest factor in avoiding browning. With 29 years of experience and IICRC-certified technicians working from our dedicated facility at Yatala, we know which rugs can take water and which can’t. If you’re unsure whether your rug is even pure jute, our team can identify it before any cleaning begins.

Getting Your Jute Rug Cleaned Safely

If your jute rug is looking tired, stained or smelling musty, the safest move is to have it professionally assessed rather than risk water damage at home. Premier Rug Cleaning offers free pickup and delivery across South East Queensland and the Northern Rivers of NSW, including Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba, so you don’t need to wrestle the rug anywhere yourself. We’ll collect it, treat it with the care a natural fibre demands, and return it clean, dry and protected — giving your jute rug the best chance of lasting for years to come.
