Can Jute Rugs Get Wet or Be Steam Cleaned?
Jute rugs should not get soaking wet. As a natural plant fibre, jute absorbs water rapidly and can shrink, brown, or develop watermarks, so steam cleaning and immersion washing are usually unsuitable. Jute and other natural-fibre rugs need low-moisture, fibre-specific cleaning by a specialist to avoid permanent damage.
Why Water Is Risky for Jute Rugs
Jute is a natural cellulose fibre spun from a plant stalk, which makes it beautifully textured but also highly absorbent. When jute soaks up water it can swell, shrink and distort as it dries, and the fibres lose strength while wet. The bigger problem is browning: water draws natural lignins and dyes to the surface, leaving yellow-brown watermarks and tide lines that are very difficult to reverse. Excess moisture also encourages mould and a musty odour because jute holds water deep in its weave. For these reasons, the saturating methods used on synthetic rugs are the wrong choice for jute.
Should Jute Rugs Be Steam Cleaned?
Generally, no. Steam cleaning combines heat and moisture, and both are risky for jute — the heat can set browning while the moisture triggers shrinkage and watermarking. A reputable rug cleaner will instead assess the fibre first and use a controlled, low-moisture method matched to natural fibres, focusing on dry soil removal, careful spot treatment and minimal water with rapid, controlled drying. The goal is to clean the rug thoroughly without ever letting it become saturated.
What to Do If Your Jute Rug Gets Wet
Act quickly. Blot up as much moisture as you can with clean, dry towels — press, don’t rub, as rubbing frays the fibres. Lift the rug off any wet flooring and lay it flat to dry with plenty of airflow from fans or an open window; avoid direct heat and harsh sun, which can scorch and fade jute. Do not hang a wet jute rug, as the weight of the water can stretch it out of shape. If the rug has been heavily soaked — for example after a leak or flood — contact a professional before browning and mould set in.
