Why Does My Jute Rug Smell and How Do I Fix It?

A musty jute rug almost always points to trapped moisture. Jute is a highly absorbent plant fibre, so humidity, spills or damp floors let mould and mildew grow deep in the weave, producing that sour, earthy smell. The fix is to dry it fully and remove the moisture source — and if the odour keeps returning, the rug needs proper off-site cleaning.

Why Jute Rugs Develop a Musty Smell

Jute is a natural cellulose fibre, and that is exactly why it smells. When new, a faint earthy scent comes from lignin, a plant compound in the fibre — this is harmless and fades with airing. A genuine musty or sour smell is different and signals a moisture problem. Jute is extremely absorbent, so humid Queensland air, a spill that was not dried quickly, a damp concrete slab, or a leak lets water sit in the weave. In that moisture, mould and mildew take hold within the fibres and release the stale odour you can smell. The same dampness also breaks down the fibre and can cause brown water rings or staining. Because the smell lives deep in the foundation, not just on the surface, simply spraying air freshener or vacuuming the top rarely fixes it — the underlying moisture and microbial growth have to be dealt with.

How to Fix a Mild Musty Smell Yourself

If the smell is mild and the rug is only slightly damp, you can often freshen it at home — the golden rule is keep moisture to an absolute minimum. Start by drying it completely: open windows, run a fan or dehumidifier, and lay the rug flat so air reaches both sides. Sunshine and fresh air help, as UV light discourages mildew, but avoid prolonged harsh sun that can fade the fibres. Next, sprinkle baking soda generously over the rug, leave it several hours or overnight to absorb odour, then vacuum thoroughly. A very light mist of diluted white vinegar can help, but never saturate jute — too much water makes the problem worse and can trigger browning. Critically, fix the source: lift the rug off a damp floor, add a breathable underlay, and stop using it in bathrooms or other humid spots. If the smell fades and stays gone, the moisture was caught in time.

When the Smell Means Mould — and DIY Won't Cut It

If the musty smell keeps coming back, spreads, or comes with discolouration, the mould has rooted deep in the rug and home methods will not reach it. Over-wetting jute is genuinely risky — shampooing or hosing it can lock in moisture, cause cellulosic browning, and accelerate fibre rot, so a hired carpet machine is the wrong tool for a natural-fibre rug. A persistent odour, especially after a flood, leak or long damp spell, needs controlled assessment and drying that a household simply cannot replicate. Lingering mould is also a health concern, which is another reason not to keep living with a smelly rug. At this stage the safest path is a specialist who can treat the fibre correctly, kill the microbial growth, and dry the rug fully so the smell does not return — rather than gambling with water at home.
