Why You Should Never Rub a Rug Stain
It is a natural instinct to scrub hard at a fresh spill, but on a rug that is the worst thing you can do. Rubbing pushes the liquid down into the foundation of the rug rather than lifting it out, and the friction spreads the stain wider than the original spot. Worse, scrubbing abrades the pile — it breaks down and unravels the fibre tips, leaving a roughed-up, matted, worn patch that never fully recovers, even after the stain itself is gone. On delicate wool, silk, viscose and hand-knotted rugs, that fibre damage is often permanent. Aggressive rubbing can also drive the spill into the backing and grind in any grit already in the rug, creating a dull, fuzzy area that stands out from the surrounding pile. How to Blot a Stain the Right Way
Move quickly — the sooner you act, the more you lift before the stain sets. First, scoop up any solids with a spoon or blunt knife. Then take a clean, dry white cloth or paper towel (white so no dye transfers to the rug) and press it firmly onto the spill, holding for a few seconds so it soaks up the liquid. Lift, refold to a clean section, and repeat — pressing, lifting and replacing the cloth until no more transfers. Always blot from the outside edge of the stain inward, which stops it spreading into clean fibres. If you need moisture, use a little cool water (never hot — heat sets many stains) and keep it minimal, as over-wetting a rug risks browning, colour run and mould in the backing. Resist the urge to scrub between blots. Gentle, patient, repeated blotting always beats force. Once you have lifted as much as possible, lay a dry towel over the damp area, weigh it down to wick out the rest, then let the rug air dry away from direct heat.
