What should you do immediately if your rug gets soaked?
Act within the first 24 hours. Stop the water source, then lift the rug off the wet floor and blot up moisture with clean towels — never rub. Lay it flat and dry it fast with fans and airflow above and below. Avoid heat, and for valuable, soiled or contaminated-water rugs, call a professional immediately before mould sets in.
First Steps in the First Hour
Speed matters most. Stop the source of the water first — turn off a leaking pipe, mop up an overflow, or move the rug clear of a flooded area. Next, lift the rug off the wet floor: standing on damp carpet or tiles lets it keep wicking up moisture, and the floor underneath needs to dry too. Take it somewhere dry and well-ventilated, ideally with hard flooring. Then blot, don’t rub — press clean, dry towels firmly into the pile to soak up as much water as possible. Rubbing pushes moisture deeper and can distort or fuzz the fibres. For sturdier rugs you can use a wet-vacuum or a squeegee, always working in the direction of the pile. The goal in this first window is simple: remove as much standing water as you physically can, as quickly as you can, before it sinks into the foundation and underlay.
Drying a Wet Rug the Right Way
Once the bulk of the water is out, focus on drying both sides thoroughly. Lay the rug flat rather than hanging a heavy, saturated rug, which can stretch and warp the weave. Set up fans to move air across the surface, and if you can, raise the rug on blocks or chairs so air circulates underneath as well — trapped moisture against the floor is where mould starts. Open windows and run a dehumidifier to pull dampness out of the room. Once the top feels dry, flip the rug and dry the underside. Critically, do not use a hairdryer, heater or direct sun: excessive heat shrinks natural fibres like wool, sets stains, and can cause dyes to run. Drying a thick wool, Persian or shaggy rug evenly is genuinely hard at home, and a rug that feels dry on top is often still damp at the base — which is exactly how that musty smell and hidden mould develop days later.
Mould and Why the Water Type Matters
You are racing the clock. In Queensland’s warm, humid climate, mould can begin growing on a wet rug within 24 to 48 hours — often faster than in cooler regions. That is why getting a soaked rug genuinely dry, not just surface-dry, is so urgent. The source of the water also changes how you should respond. Clean water from a burst pipe or rainwater is the best case. But greywater — washing-machine or dishwasher overflow, fish tanks — is contaminated, and blackwater from sewage or flood water carries bacteria and pathogens. With anything other than clean water, a rug that has been wet for more than a day or two needs proper sanitising, not just drying, to be safe. Even with clean water, antique, silk, hand-knotted or heavily soiled rugs are too valuable to risk improvising on. If in doubt about the water type or the rug’s value, treat it as a job for a specialist.
