What should you do immediately when something spills on a rug?

The single most important thing with any rug spill is speed. A fresh spill sits near the surface of the pile; the longer it lingers, the deeper it soaks into the fibres and foundation, where it becomes far harder to remove. Start by lifting any solids — food, mud or thick liquid — with a spoon or blunt knife, scooping gently from the outside towards the centre so you do not spread it. Then take a clean, white cloth or paper towel (coloured cloths can transfer their own dye into your rug) and press it firmly onto the spill. Let the cloth absorb the liquid, swapping to a fresh dry section as each one becomes saturated. Never rub or scrub. Rubbing forces the spill deeper into the pile and can permanently distort or fray delicate fibres. Always work from the outer edge of the spill inwards to stop a small mark turning into a large ring. Patient, repeated blotting lifts far more than a few aggressive wipes ever will.
Use Cool Water — Avoid Hot Water and Harsh Chemicals
Once you have blotted up as much as possible, lightly dampen a fresh cloth with cool water and continue blotting. Heat is the enemy of natural fibres: hot or even warm water can set protein-based spills, cause dyes to bleed, and make wool shrink or felt. Resist the urge to reach for an all-purpose spray, bleach, vinegar or supermarket stain remover. These often contain high-alkaline or oxidising agents that strip the natural oils from wool, fade hand-dyed colours, and leave a sticky residue that actually attracts more dirt over time — leaving a patch that re-soils faster than the rest of the rug. Over-wetting is just as risky: soaking a rug means the backing stays damp for days, inviting mould, mildew and odours underneath where you cannot see them. If you must use anything beyond water, a tiny amount of pH-neutral wool-safe detergent diluted in cool water is the safest option, and always test it on a hidden corner first. When in doubt, plain cool water and blotting will hold the situation until a specialist can assess it.
What Not to Do (Common Spill Mistakes)

Do not scrub or use a brush; agitation damages the pile structure and spreads the stain. Do not pour water directly onto the rug or drench it, as over-wetting causes shrinkage, colour run and mould in the foundation. Do not apply heat from a hairdryer or steam, which sets many stains. Do not use bleach, hydrogen peroxide, oxidisers or coloured cleaning cloths on wool, silk, viscose or any hand-knotted rug. And do not ignore a spill that has soaked through to the backing, even if the surface looks clean — trapped moisture and residue will resurface as a stain or smell later. With pet accidents, juice, red wine, coffee or anything that has dried in, gentle blotting buys you time but rarely removes the problem completely. The safest move is to contain it, then book a proper professional clean before the stain has a chance to set for good.
