Why Bleach Is the Wrong Choice for a Mouldy Rug
It is tempting to reach for bleach, but it does more harm than good on most rugs. Chlorine bleach reacts badly with wool, which is naturally acidic — it alters the fibre’s chemical structure, weakening it so the pile breaks down and sheds. On dyed, hand-knotted Persian, Oriental and other natural-fibre rugs, bleach strips and bleaches the colours, leaving permanent pale patches and runs that cannot be undone.
