How should I roll or fold a rug ready for pickup?

Always roll a rug for pickup — never fold it. Folding creates permanent creases and can crack the foundation, especially on wool and handmade rugs. Roll it evenly along the length with the pile facing inward, then tie loosely with soft string. With Premier Rug Cleaning's free pickup and delivery, our team can roll and load it safely for you.

Why You Should Roll a Rug, Never Fold It

The single most important rule is simple: roll your rug, do not fold it. Folding forces a hard crease into the fibres and the backing, and on quality rugs that crease often becomes permanent. On hand-knotted wool, silk and antique rugs, a sharp fold can actually crack the foundation threads, leading to fraying or a split right through the weave. A rolled rug, by contrast, distributes the bend gently across a wide curve, so the fibres and foundation are never stressed at a single point. Even sturdy synthetic rugs hold fold-lines that take weeks to relax out. If your rug has been folded in a cupboard for a long time, that is all the more reason to have it professionally cleaned and dried flat — full immersion washing at our Yatala facility helps relax set-in creases that a quick surface clean cannot touch. When in doubt, roll it loosely and let our team handle the rest at collection.

The Right Way to Roll a Rug for Transport

Start by giving the rug a good vacuum on both sides and shaking out loose grit — embedded sand is abrasive and grinds into the fibres as you roll. Next, find the pile direction by running your hand across the surface; one way feels smooth, the other resists. To protect the delicate face, roll with the pile facing inward and roll along the length so you finish with a long, even cylinder rather than a fat, awkward bundle. Roll firmly but not bone-tight: if you hear cracking or feel hard resistance, ease off. Once rolled, secure each end with soft cotton string or twine — never packing tape, which pulls fibres and leaves residue when removed. Tie it snug enough to hold the shape but not so tight that it bites a dent into the roll. For larger or heavier rugs, a second pair of hands makes the job far safer for both you and the rug.

Wrapping and Protecting the Roll

If you need to wrap the rolled rug before it is collected, choose a breathable material such as a clean cotton sheet, calico or a canvas drop cloth. Avoid sealing it in plastic for anything more than a short trip — plastic traps moisture against the fibres and, in our warm Queensland climate, that can quickly lead to mould, mildew and musty odours. Lay the rolled rug flat rather than standing it on one end for long periods, and never stack heavy boxes or sharp-cornered items on top, as a single pressure point can dent or tear the foundation. Keep it off damp concrete and out of direct sun. Honestly, for most customers the easiest and safest option is to skip the wrapping altogether and let our experienced team roll and load the rug correctly during pickup — it is part of the service, and 29 years of handling delicate rugs means we know exactly how each fibre type should be moved.
