Can mould or musty smells be removed from a rug by washing?
Yes — but only a proper full immersion wash removes mould and musty smells at the source, not a surface clean. The smell comes from mould and bacteria living deep in the fibres and backing. Submersion washing flushes out the spores, an antimicrobial treatment kills regrowth, and controlled drying removes every trace of trapped moisture so the odour does not return.
Why Does a Rug Smell Musty in the First Place?
That damp, musty odour is not just “old rug” smell — it is the by-product of living mould and bacteria. When a rug stays damp (from a spill, a leak, high humidity, drying too slowly after a clean, or sitting on a cool floor) moisture becomes trapped deep in the pile and backing. Mould and bacteria feed on the fibres and release microbial gases, known as MVOCs, which is what your nose picks up. The trouble is that the worst of it lives at the base of the rug, against the foundation and backing — exactly where everyday vacuuming and surface sprays cannot reach. That is why air fresheners, baking soda and shop-bought sprays only mask the smell for a day or two before it creeps back: the spores are still alive and breeding underneath.
Why Surface Cleaning Won't Fix It
Steam cleaning, dry shampoos and DIY treatments work on the very top of the pile, but a musty rug needs the spores removed from the whole structure — fibres, foundation and backing. Worse, the wrong approach can make things far worse: adding moisture with a steam cleaner and not drying the rug fully simply feeds the mould you are trying to kill. Household mould sprays and bleach are also risky on natural fibres — bleach can yellow and weaken wool, and most sprays never penetrate to the backing where the colony lives. To genuinely eliminate a musty smell you need three things working together: deep spore removal, an antimicrobial treatment, and complete moisture elimination. A surface clean delivers none of them, which is why the odour keeps returning.

Immersion flushes mould spores, bacteria and odour-causing residue out of the foundation and backing — something no surface method can do. A fibre-appropriate antimicrobial treatment is applied to neutralise remaining spores and discourage regrowth. The rug is then mechanically rinsed and the bulk of the water extracted before it ever leaves the wash floor.
