The rug is then thoroughly rinsed to carry the dissolved contaminants and residue out of the fibres completely. Before any of this, an IICRC-certified technician inspects the rug, identifies the fibre and tests the dyes for colour-fastness, then tailors the wash to suit wool, silk, cotton or synthetic construction. Finally the rug is dried in a controlled environment so it comes back fully dry, with no lingering damp that could trigger the smell again. In most cases, yes — a proper immersion wash removes the odour entirely, even from older accidents. There are honest limits worth knowing, though. Heavy, repeated soiling in the same area can also weaken fibres over time.
