Why Wool Rugs Shrink in the First Place
Wool doesn’t simply ‘shrink’ — it felts. Each wool fibre is covered in microscopic scales, and when three conditions come together at once — heat, moisture and agitation — those scales open up and lock into one another, drawing the fibres permanently closer and making the rug smaller, denser and distorted. The risk climbs sharply once water passes roughly 30°C, and rough scrubbing makes it worse by forcing the scales to rub and interlock. Once a rug has felted, the change is irreversible. This is exactly why throwing a wool rug in a domestic washing machine, blasting it with hot steam, or scrubbing hard with a stiff brush so often ends in a ruined, shrunken rug. Water itself is not the enemy — uncontrolled heat, friction and prolonged dampness are. How Wool Can Be Water-Washed Safely

A rug left damp for too long is at risk of shrinkage, mould, musty odours and dye instability. That’s why controlled drying is non-negotiable. Excess water is first removed mechanically, then the rug is dried flat or elevated with strong, even air movement across both faces, often with dehumidification, and turned partway through so it dries uniformly. Direct sun and high heat are avoided, as both can scorch fibres and fade colours. The goal is to get the rug from saturated to bone dry quickly and evenly — never to let it sit wet on a tiled floor or over a balcony rail for days.
