Can You Steam Clean a Persian Rug?
You can, but you generally shouldn't. Hot-water steam cleaning is risky on a genuine hand-knotted Persian rug — high heat can run the natural dyes, strip the wool's protective lanolin and trap moisture in the foundation, leading to dye bleed, shrinkage or mould. The safer method for fine rugs is controlled, full-immersion washing done off-site.
Why Steam Cleaning a Persian Rug Is Risky
Steam cleaning (hot-water extraction) was designed for fixed wall-to-wall carpet, not for delicate hand-knotted rugs. A genuine Persian rug is usually wool, sometimes silk, and often coloured with natural dyes that are not fully colour-fast. There are three core problems. First, dye bleed — hot water can loosen reds, blues and other natural dyes so they migrate into pale areas, leaving permanent staining. Second, fibre damage — wool contains lanolin, a natural oil that keeps it supple and lustrous, and excessive heat strips it, leaving the pile dry and brittle. Third, trapped moisture — a domestic steam machine pushes water into the foundation but can’t pull it back out, so a thick rug stays damp for days, inviting shrinkage, dry rot and mould. On top of that, steam cleaning is only a surface clean; the grit ground deep into the base of the rug stays put.
How Persian and Oriental Rugs Should Actually Be Cleaned
The recognised method for fine, hand-knotted rugs is gentle, full-immersion washing in a controlled facility — not in your living room. The rug is first inspected and its dyes tested for colour-fastness, then thoroughly dusted to shake out the kilos of dry soil that vacuuming and steam can never reach.
