What Is a Rug Wash Pit?
A rug wash pit (sometimes called a wash bay, wash pool or rug bath) is a large, purpose-built basin used by specialist rug cleaners to clean rugs by full immersion. Rather than spraying water onto the surface, the entire rug is laid flat and submerged so water and fibre-appropriate detergent can penetrate right through the pile, foundation and backing. This is how rugs have traditionally been hand-washed for centuries, now done in a controlled, plumbed facility with proper drainage and clean-water rinsing. Because a wash pit holds hundreds of litres of water and needs space to lay rugs flat, this work is always done off-site — it simply cannot be replicated in your home. How Does Submersion Washing Work, Step by Step?
Submersion washing follows a careful sequence. First the rug is dusted — dry soil is vibrated out of the foundation, removing the bulk of grit that ordinary vacuuming leaves behind. Next the rug is inspected and tested for colour-fastness and any pre-existing damage, so the right detergent and method can be chosen and dye bleeding prevented. The rug is then laid in the wash pit and fully submerged, with a fibre-specific cleaning solution worked gently through both sides using soft brushes or light agitation. After washing, the rug is rinsed repeatedly with clean water until every trace of detergent and dissolved soil is flushed out. Finally, excess water is extracted and the rug is dried in a controlled environment with airflow and dehumidification so it returns completely dry, not damp. Each stage is matched to the rug in front of us rather than a one-size-fits-all setting.

Most in-home or hired-machine cleaning only treats the top of the pile. Dirt, sand, dust-mite waste, pet residue and odours sit deep in the foundation where surface methods never reach — and adding water without the ability to rinse and fully dry can leave a rug damp, smelly or even mould-prone. Submersion washing solves this by flooding the rug with water so contaminants dissolve and lift away, then rinsing them completely out of the fibres.
