Can all rugs be washed?

Almost every rug can be cleaned, but not every rug can be cleaned the same way. Durable wool and most natural fibres respond well to full immersion washing, while delicate silk, viscose (art silk) and some antiques need gentler, low-moisture methods. The safe approach is determined by a fibre test and inspection before any water touches the rug.

Which Rugs Can Be Fully Washed?

The vast majority of rugs benefit from a proper wash — the question is which method suits the fibre. Wool, cotton and most hand-knotted Persian and Oriental rugs are built to be washed and respond beautifully to full immersion cleaning, where the rug is submerged, gently agitated and thoroughly rinsed to flush out years of embedded grit, dust mites and odour that vacuuming never reaches. Most machine-made synthetics like polypropylene are also straightforward to wash. This is exactly what off-site immersion washing is designed for: a controlled, deep clean that simply cannot be matched by spraying and extracting a rug while it lies on your floor. Because the process happens at a dedicated facility rather than in your home, the rug can be dusted, washed, rinsed and dried correctly — restoring colour and softness without leaving it damp.

Which Rugs Need a Gentler Approach?

Some fibres react badly to water and must never be wet-cleaned the same way as wool. Viscose — also sold as art silk, bamboo silk or rayon — is the most fragile: it loses much of its strength when wet, can swell, stiffen or develop permanent yellow-brown watermarks, so it requires careful low-moisture handling. Genuine silk has delicate natural dyes that can bleed and a sheen that the wrong pH or heat can dull, so it is washed slowly and gently with cool, controlled solutions. Jute, sisal and seagrass are absorbent plant fibres prone to browning if over-wetted. None of these should be steam cleaned or soaked at home. With specialist knowledge they can still be cleaned safely — the method is simply adjusted to protect the fibre rather than risk it.

Why Testing Comes Before Washing

You should never assume a rug is safe to wash on appearance alone — that is how rugs get ruined. Before any cleaning begins, a qualified technician identifies the fibre, checks the construction and foundation, and runs a colour-fastness test to make sure the dyes are stable and won’t run. This pre-wash inspection determines whether the rug can be immersion washed, needs a low-moisture clean, or has damage that should be repaired first. With 29 years of experience and IICRC-certified technicians, Premier Rug Cleaning treats every rug on its own terms. Identifying the right process upfront is what protects your rug’s colour, shape and value — and it is the single biggest difference between specialist rug care and a generic carpet clean.
