Should I Vacuum My Rug Before It Is Collected for Cleaning?
A quick, gentle vacuum is helpful but not essential. It removes loose surface grit and pet hair so the rug is cleaner to handle and transport. However, it's entirely optional — our off-site facility deep-dusts every rug to lift embedded dirt that home vacuuming can't reach. Skip it if your rug is delicate, antique or fringed.
Is Vacuuming Before Pickup Necessary?
Vacuuming your rug before collection is a nice courtesy, but it is genuinely optional. A light pass with the vacuum lifts loose surface dust, sand, crumbs and pet hair, which keeps the rug tidier to roll and transport. It will not, however, change how clean your rug comes back. Unlike in-home carpet cleaning — where companies often ask you to vacuum first so their wand can reach deeper — professional off-site rug care includes a dedicated dusting stage that mechanically vibrates out the fine, embedded grit packed deep in the foundation. A household vacuum simply cannot remove that dry soil, which is exactly why we collect rugs and treat them at our facility. So if you have a spare two minutes and a healthy, robust rug, a quick vacuum does no harm. If you don’t, or you’d rather not risk it, leave it to us. Either way, your rug receives the same thorough deep clean once it reaches Yatala.
How to Vacuum a Rug Safely (If You Choose To)
If you do vacuum, do it gently and with the right settings to avoid damage. Use suction only or switch off the rotating beater bar, as aggressive brushing can fray edges, pull tufts loose and accelerate wear. Vacuum in the direction of the pile rather than against it, and go slowly so you don’t tug at the weave. Take particular care around the fringe — never run a powered brush over it, because tassels are easily caught, torn or sucked into the machine. A handy trick is to cover the nozzle with an old stocking, or use a soft upholstery attachment, to clean fringe and edges safely. For shag, flokati or high-pile rugs, use suction alone and avoid the beater entirely. The goal is simply to lift loose surface litter, not to scrub or deep clean — that part is our job once the rug is collected.
When You Should NOT Vacuum First
Some rugs are better left untouched until our technicians can assess them. Hold off on vacuuming if your rug is antique, hand-knotted, silk, viscose (art silk), or showing signs of wear, fraying, dry rot or moth damage. On a fragile or weakened rug, even normal suction can pull at loose fibres, lift damaged pile or worsen existing problems. The same applies if there is active shedding, a tear, or an area you’re worried about — moving a vacuum over it risks making it worse. You should also avoid vacuuming wet, mouldy or urine-affected areas, as this can spread contamination and damage the machine. In all these cases, the safest approach is to leave the rug exactly as it is and flag any concerns when you book. What Happens When We Collect Your Rug
Once you book, we arrange free pickup and delivery across South East Queensland and the Northern Rivers of NSW — covering Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba and surrounds. There is no need to clean, treat or prepare the rug beyond rolling it up; in fact, we’d rather you didn’t attempt spot cleaning, as DIY products can set stains permanently. We carefully collect your rug, inspect it, and take it to our dedicated immersion-wash facility at Yatala, where it is dusted, fibre-appropriately washed, rinsed, treated for stains or odours as needed, and controlled-dried before being returned fully clean and dry. So the short version is simple: a light vacuum is welcome but never required. Just point out any stains, damage or problem areas when you book, and leave the rest to us.
