How Do You Wash a Sheepskin Rug by Hand?
To hand wash a sheepskin rug, shake and brush it first, then wash it in cool water with a small amount of wool or sheepskin wash. Gently swish — never scrub — rinse until the water runs clear, press out moisture, and lay flat to air-dry in the shade. Once dry, brush the wool to restore its softness and loft.
Before You Start: Shake, Brush and Check
Preparation protects the rug. Take it outside and give it a firm shake to release loose dirt and grit, then brush the dry wool with a slicker brush or wide-tooth comb to lift out tangles and matting before any water touches it. A handheld vacuum on low suction also helps — just avoid rotating beater bars, which tear at the fibres. Crucially, confirm your rug is a genuine, single sheepskin with a leather backing, not a stitched multi-pelt rug or a synthetic faux fur. Stitched and backed rugs can come apart, distort or shrink unevenly when fully wet, so they should not be hand washed at home. If you are unsure what you are dealing with, or the rug is large, valuable or heavily soiled, stop here — full immersion of the leather hide is the single fastest way to cause permanent damage, and a professional clean is the safer choice.
Washing in Cool Water — Gently
Fill a bath or large tub with cool water and dissolve a small amount of wool wash or a dedicated sheepskin shampoo. Never use hot water, ordinary laundry detergent, bleach, fabric softener or enzyme-based cleaners — these strip the natural lanolin from the hide and can leave the leather stiff and the wool dull. Lower the rug in and gently swish and squeeze it through the water, letting the suds lift the dirt. Do not scrub, wring or rub the wool against itself: friction mats the fibres into a felted texture that cannot be reversed. Once the water turns grubby, drain it and refill with fresh cool water to rinse, repeating until the water runs completely clear. Leftover wash residue is a common mistake — it dries hard and stiffens the wool, so rinse more thoroughly than you think you need to. Throughout, handle the rug by supporting its full weight rather than lifting it by one edge, as waterlogged leather tears easily.
Drying Without Hardening the Leather
Drying is where most sheepskin rugs are ruined. Press out as much water as you can — lay the rug between towels and push down, or roll it in a towel, but never wring it. Then lay it flat on a clean surface, in the shade, with good airflow. Keep it away from direct sunlight, heaters, radiators and the clothes dryer: direct heat bakes the leather backing crisp, shrinks it and can crack it. Air-drying takes time, often a couple of days. Every few hours, give the rug a gentle massage and flex with your hands and turn it over, which keeps the leather supple as it dries and stops a musty smell developing. Resist the urge to speed things up — patience here is what keeps the hide soft and the rug the right shape.
Finishing Up — and When to Leave It to the Pros
Once the rug is fully dry, restore the look by giving it a light beating outdoors with a soft stick to fluff the pile, then brush the wool with a slicker brush or wool comb to lift the loft and bring back the softness. If the wool has matted, work small sections at a time. Be realistic about limits, though: deep-set yellowing, set-in pet urine, ingrained odours or any sign that the backing has stiffened are usually beyond a home wash, and the wrong attempt can do lasting harm to a costly rug.
