How Can I Tell If My Rug Is Wool, Silk or Synthetic?
You can usually identify a rug's material with three quick checks at home: feel the pile (wool is soft and springy, synthetics feel flatter and plasticky), look at the sheen (silk and viscose are glossy, wool is matte), and flip it over to inspect the knots and backing. When you are unsure, an expert assessment confirms the fibre before cleaning.
The Feel Test: Wool, Silk and Synthetic
Touch is the fastest first clue. Wool has a naturally crimped structure, so it feels soft, slightly textured, warm and springy — press the pile down and a wool rug bounces back. Synthetic fibres like polypropylene, nylon and polyester tend to feel smoother, flatter and cooler, sometimes a little plasticky, and they stay flattened when pressed. Silk feels exceptionally smooth and cool, with a fine, dense pile that glides under the hand. The tricky one is viscose (also sold as art silk, bamboo silk or rayon): it mimics real silk’s softness but is far weaker, and it sheds readily under light rubbing — a quick rub test that releases loose fibres often points to viscose rather than wool or genuine silk.
Check the Sheen and How Light Behaves
The way a rug reflects light is a strong giveaway. Wool has an understated, matte sheen that scatters light softly, so colours look rich but not glossy. Silk has a beautiful, refined lustre that subtly shifts colour as you change your viewing angle — turn the rug and the tone appears to lighten or darken. Viscose tries to copy this effect but its shine is brighter, glassier and less refined, and it dulls noticeably with wear or moisture. Polypropylene and polyester reflect light uniformly, giving a consistently glossy, plastic-like finish. If the rug looks like silk but feels slightly cold and overly shiny, it is very likely viscose — which matters a great deal, because viscose is extremely sensitive to water and needs specialist handling.
Flip It Over: Knots, Backing and Labels
The back of a rug tells you more than the front. Hand-knotted wool and silk rugs show individual, slightly irregular knots, and the pattern on the front is clearly mirrored on the back. Natural backing materials such as cotton or jute foundation threads are another sign of a genuine wool or silk rug. Machine-made synthetic rugs usually have a uniform, repetitive stitch, a glued or latex backing, and often a fabric label sewn on — handmade rugs are rarely labelled this way. You can also try a small water-drop test on an inconspicuous corner: a drop absorbs into wool, while it tends to bead and sit on top of synthetics. Avoid the burn test at home; snipping and lighting fibres risks damaging a valuable rug.
When to Have the Fibre Professionally Identified
Home tests narrow it down, but getting the fibre wrong before cleaning can cause shrinkage, dye bleed or permanent damage — viscose and silk in particular are unforgiving.
