A light mist of equal parts white vinegar and water can help neutralise mild mustiness, but never soak the rug. These methods can freshen a rug that was caught early. However, they have real limits: home remedies sit on the surface and rarely penetrate the foundation where mould lives. On wool, silk or viscose rugs, over-wetting with vinegar or peroxide risks colour run, fibre damage and shrinkage.
