How do you get a musty or stale smell out of a rug?

A musty smell in a rug is almost always trapped moisture feeding mould and bacteria deep in the fibres and backing. Air it out in sunlight, vacuum both sides, sprinkle bicarb soda overnight, then mist with diluted white vinegar. If the stale smell keeps returning, the moisture is locked too deep and only a professional deep wash and full drying will clear it.

What Causes a Musty Smell in a Rug?

That stale, damp odour is rarely the rug itself — it is the by-product of mould, mildew and bacteria living inside the pile and backing. When a rug stays even slightly damp, these microbes feed on dust, skin cells and organic residue and release the musty gases you smell. The moisture usually comes from one of a few sources: a rug laid on tiles or concrete with no airflow underneath, a spill or pet accident that was never fully dried, a leaking air-conditioner or window, or over-wetting during a previous DIY clean that never dried out. In SE Queensland and Northern NSW the problem is worse, because high humidity keeps fibres permanently a little damp and gives mould a constant foothold. The smell is a warning sign: if it is musty, moisture is sitting somewhere it should not be, and surface fresheners will only mask it for a day or two.

Home Steps That Are Worth Trying First

For a mild, recent smell you can try a few safe steps at home. First, hang or lay the rug outside in direct sunlight and fresh air for a few hours — UV light and airflow kill surface mould spores and lift a lot of dampness. Vacuum thoroughly on both sides to pull out grit and spores. Next, sprinkle a generous layer of bicarbonate of soda over the rug, leave it overnight to absorb moisture and odour, then vacuum it away. For lingering smells, lightly mist (never soak) a 50/50 white-vinegar-and-water solution and let it air dry completely. Keep indoor humidity under control with fans, open windows or a dehumidifier so the rug dries fast. These methods help with mild cases, but be cautious on wool, silk, viscose or antique rugs — too much water or the wrong product can shrink fibres, run dyes or cause more damage than the smell itself.

Why the Smell Keeps Coming Back

The most frustrating part of a musty rug is when the smell fades, then returns a week later — usually on a humid or rainy day. That happens because home methods only treat the surface. The moisture and the mould colonies causing the odour are buried deep in the foundation and backing, where bicarb and sprays simply cannot reach. Worse, lightly wetting a rug at home without proper drying often makes things worse, feeding the very mould you are trying to kill. The only reliable fix is to fully flush the contamination out of the rug and then dry it completely, fast — something that is almost impossible to do on a floor at home. This is exactly why Premier cleans rugs off-site rather than in your living room: a musty rug needs to be submerged, rinsed right through and dried in a controlled environment, not surface-sprayed where it sits.

How Professional Cleaning Removes Musty Odour for Good

At our dedicated Yatala facility, a musty rug is first inspected and dusted to remove embedded grit and dry spores, then given a full immersion wash that flushes mould, bacteria and odour-causing residue right out of the foundation — not just the surface. Fibre-safe antimicrobial treatment tackles the source of the smell, and the rug is then dried under controlled airflow and humidity so it comes back completely dry, never damp. That controlled drying is the step DIY can never match, and it is why the odour does not return. With 29 years of experience and IICRC-certified technicians, we treat wool, silk, Persian, antique and synthetic rugs safely.
