What Causes a Musty Smell in a Rug?

Vacuum thoroughly on both sides to pull out grit and spores. Next, sprinkle a generous layer of bicarbonate of soda over the rug, leave it overnight to absorb moisture and odour, then vacuum it away. For lingering smells, lightly mist (never soak) a 50/50 white-vinegar-and-water solution and let it air dry completely. Keep indoor humidity under control with fans, open windows or a dehumidifier so the rug dries fast. These methods help with mild cases, but be cautious on wool, silk, viscose or antique rugs — too much water or the wrong product can shrink fibres, run dyes or cause more damage than the smell itself.
