To dry a wet rug, act fast: stop the water source, blot up as much moisture as possible, lift the rug off wet flooring, and dry it flat with strong airflow on both sides. Act Within the First 24-48 Hours
Time is the most important factor with a wet rug. Mould and mildew can begin to grow within 24 to 48 hours, and the longer a rug stays damp, the higher the risk of permanent odours, rotting backing, and dyes bleeding from one area into another. Wool and natural-fibre rugs are especially vulnerable. Getting the rug drying quickly — and getting moisture out of the foundation, not just the surface — is what protects it from lasting damage.
Step-by-Step: Drying a Wet Rug
First, stop the source of water and move the rug away from any leak or wet flooring — leaving it on a damp floor wicks moisture straight back up. Blot the rug with clean towels, pressing firmly rather than rubbing. Raise the rug so air can reach both sides: drape it over sturdy supports or lay it flat with the underside exposed, and run fans and a dehumidifier to keep air moving. Avoid direct heat, hair dryers and harsh sun, which can shrink fibres and set stains. Keep drying until the rug is completely dry to the touch deep in the pile, not just on top.
When to Call a Professional
Some situations are beyond a DIY dry. Call a specialist if the water was from a flood, river, or sewage (category 2 or 3 water carries contamination), if the rug is an antique, wool, silk or hand-knotted piece, if it’s large and heavily saturated, or if it still smells musty after drying. Trapped moisture in the foundation is hard to remove at home and is the usual cause of mould and recurring odours weeks later.
