How Do You Clean a Genuine Sheepskin Rug?

To clean a genuine sheepskin rug, hand wash it in cold water with an enzyme-free wool wash — never machine wash, use hot water, bleach or a dryer. Gently swish, rinse until clear, squeeze (don't wring) the water out, reshape the leather backing while damp, then air dry away from heat and sunlight before brushing the wool back up.

Routine Care to Keep a Sheepskin Rug Fresh

Most sheepskin rugs only need gentle upkeep rather than a full wash. Vacuum weekly using plain suction (no rotating beater bar), and shake the rug outdoors regularly to lift loose dust and stop the wool from flattening. A periodic brush with a wire pet brush or specialised wool carding brush, working in the direction of the pile, keeps the fleece soft and fluffy. Address spills the moment they happen by blotting with a clean, dry cloth, then sponging the spot with a little cold wool-wash solution — never rub hard, as this mats the fibres. Keep the rug out of direct, constant sunlight too, because prolonged UV exposure is a leading cause of yellowing that is very difficult to reverse once it sets in. Good routine care like this dramatically reduces how often a full wash is needed and protects the leather backing from drying out over time.

How to Hand Wash a Sheepskin Rug Safely

When a deeper clean is needed, hand washing is the safest method for a genuine pelt. First, brush the rug while dry to remove tangles. Fill a bath or large tub with cold water and add a small amount of enzyme-free wool wash made for sheepskin. Submerge the rug and gently swish it so the water loosens trapped dirt — do not scrub, wring or agitate aggressively, as friction creates an irreversible felted, matted texture. Drain the dirty water, refill with clean cold water, and rinse repeatedly until the water runs clear and soap-free. The golden rules are simple: no hot water, no bleach, no biological or enzyme detergents, no fabric softener and never a washing machine. Hot water and harsh chemicals strip the wool’s natural lanolin and shrink or harden the leather backing, while enzymes literally digest the protein fibres. Keeping everything cool and gentle is what protects the rug.

Drying and Reshaping Without Shrinking

Drying is where most sheepskin rugs are accidentally ruined, so take care here. After rinsing, gently squeeze out excess water — never twist or wring, which can tear the hide. Lay the rug flat and, while it is still damp, gently stretch the leather backing back to its original size and shape; the suede shrinks and stiffens as it dries, so reshaping now prevents permanent curling and hardening. Always air dry in a well-ventilated spot away from direct sunlight and any heat source — no radiators, hairdryers, heaters or clothes dryers, all of which bake and harden the leather. Some airflow speeds things along. Once the rug is fully dry, brush the wool thoroughly with a wire brush to restore its loft and softness. If the leather feels a little stiff, working it gently by hand or tapping the back helps soften it back up.

When to Leave It to a Specialist

Genuine sheepskin is forgiving with gentle care, but some situations call for professional attention: stubborn set-in stains, heavy yellowing, strong odours, pet urine that has soaked into the hide, or simply a large, valuable pelt you would rather not risk. DIY washing also carries real risk of shrinking the backing or felting the wool if anything goes wrong. With 29 years of experience and IICRC-certified technicians, Premier Rug Cleaning treats sheepskin with fibre-appropriate, controlled methods at our dedicated Yatala facility — including careful drying so the leather stays supple and the wool comes back fluffy, never damp or hardened.
