Steam cleaning vs immersion washing: which is better for rugs?
Immersion washing is the deeper, safer method for valuable and natural-fibre rugs, fully submerging the rug to flush out embedded grit, dust and odours. Steam cleaning only refreshes the surface and can shrink wool or bleed dyes. For most wool, silk, Persian and antique rugs, full immersion washing is the professional standard.
How Each Method Actually Works
The two methods are very different. Steam cleaning (hot water extraction) sprays heated water and detergent onto the surface of the rug, then vacuums most of it back out. It cleans the top of the pile but cannot reach the dirt packed down at the base of the fibres or in the foundation. Immersion washing takes the opposite approach: the rug is first dusted to shake out dry grit, then fully submerged in water and gently washed through its entire thickness before being thoroughly rinsed and controlled-dried. Because the rug is soaked and flushed rather than skimmed, immersion lifts out years of trapped soil, sand, dust mites and odour that surface cleaning simply leaves behind. This is the traditional, hands-on process used for handmade and Oriental rugs worldwide, and it is what we do at our dedicated Yatala facility.
Why Steam Cleaning Can Damage Some Rugs
Steam cleaning has real risks on natural-fibre and handmade rugs. The high heat can strip the lanolin oil that protects wool, and hot water can cause natural and unstable dyes to run, bleeding colours into one another and permanently muddying the pattern. Heat and moisture can also shrink wool and cotton, making the rug buckle and ripple. Crucially, because steam cleaning is usually done in your home, there is no controlled drying, so moisture trapped in a thick rug or its backing can lead to musty smells or mould. For these reasons, steam cleaning is generally not recommended for wool, silk, viscose, antique or hand-knotted Persian and Oriental rugs. It is genuinely useful, however, on robust modern synthetics like polypropylene, where a quick freshen-up is all that is needed.
Which Method Is Right for Your Rug?
There is no single winner — the right method depends on the rug. A durable synthetic floor rug that just needs a light refresh can suit steam cleaning. But a wool, silk, jute, Persian or antique rug, or any rug with heavy soiling, set-in stains, pet odours, mould or flood damage, needs full immersion washing to clean it properly and safely. That is why every rug should be assessed first. At Premier Rug Cleaning, every job begins with a fibre and dye-stability check so we choose the safest approach for your specific rug, rather than forcing one method onto everything. With 29 years of experience and IICRC-certified technicians, we match the process to the rug, not the other way around.
