Why is it so important to have a rug stored correctly
Rolling up your valuable rug and storing it in the garage or basement is a big no no!
Before storing any rug it should first be cleaned because if stored as it is, any odours will get worse and if there is an existing stain, there is a chance that could bleach into the rug due to warm temperatures inside the rug coil. Plus, there are plenty of insects and rodents that enjoy nothing more than the centre of a warm rolled up rug. When rolled up, your rug cannot breathe very well at all and it will absorb the morning moisture in the room and ‘sweat’ as the day warms up.
Don’t forget – a rolled up rug (or carpet) makes for an excellent home for rats and mice with a ready-made food source!

How to store your rug:
Wash rug thoroughly to remove remove bacterai, dry soil and contaminants. Compounded ground soil left in rugs can weaken the fibre and destroy the warp & weft yarn.
Roll and wrap it in heshian, allowing your rug to breathe. Do not fold your rug for any length of time as it will cause undue stress on the foundation fibres.
Elevate when storing and do not stack anything on top of the rug. This will allow you to keep an easy eye on it to spot any potential problems with rodents and/or moisture issues.
Check your rug every 6-12 months and more if the surroundings are not ideal. You will need to lay your rug out on the ground and let it ‘breathe’ for a couple of days. The more air circulating the better.
If you follow the above, you should be okay. However, as there are many factors involved that can cause harm to a stored rug, we only offer the above tips as a suggestion.
