How Can You Tell the Difference Between Moth and Carpet Beetle Damage?
The quickest tell is the leftover evidence. Clothes moths leave fine silky webbing, tube-like cases and sand-grain frass, with grazed patches and small holes hidden under furniture. Carpet beetles leave no webbing — instead you'll find bristly, carrot-shaped shed larval skins and gritty droppings, with thinned or bald patches. Both attack wool, so a close look at the debris is the surest way to identify which pest is to blame.
What Clothes Moth Damage Looks Like
Clothes moths (most often the casemaking or webbing moth) are the classic enemy of wool, silk and other natural-fibre rugs. The adult moth does no harm — it’s the small, cream-coloured caterpillar-like larvae that feed. The hallmark sign is fine silken webbing: wisps of silk, small silk tubes or case-like cocoons spun across the pile, often the same colour as the rug. You’ll also spot frass, a grainy dust the size of sand or salt grains that matches the wool colour. Larvae tend to graze the surface, leaving thin, worn patches and scattered irregular holes, and they hide where the rug is rarely disturbed — under heavy furniture, along skirting boards and on the underside of the rug. If you turn a rug over and find grazed channels with silk and grit in the foundation, clothes moths are the likely culprit. Damage often clusters around areas with body oils, food residue or pet hair, which the larvae feed on.
What Carpet Beetle Damage Looks Like
Carpet beetle larvae cause very similar destruction to moths but leave behind a different signature. The biggest giveaway is the absence of webbing — beetles spin no silk at all. Instead, you’ll find numerous shed larval skins: tiny, bristly, carrot-shaped or sunflower-seed-shaped casings that look translucent brown and hollow, scattered near the damage, under the rug and around furniture seams. The larvae themselves are fuzzy, hairy and slow-moving — sometimes nicknamed “woolly bears.” Carpet beetles are more adventurous than moths and roam between rooms, so damage can appear in patches rather than one concentrated spot. They tend to chew right through the fibres, producing thinned, shaved or bald areas and larger irregular holes, frequently along edges and under furniture where it’s dark and undisturbed. You may also notice the small, rounded adult beetles near windows, as they’re drawn to light when they emerge to breed.
Side-by-Side: The Tell-Tale Signs
When you’re trying to identify the pest, focus on three clues. Webbing: present with moths (silk threads, tubes, cases) and completely absent with beetles. Casings: beetles leave distinctive bristly shed skins, while moths leave silk cases instead. Frass: both leave grainy droppings, but with moths it’s mixed into silk and with beetles it’s loose and gritty. The damage pattern helps too — moths graze and create clustered surface wear in hidden spots, whereas beetles chew through, leaving bald patches that can spread room to room. If you find a fuzzy, segmented grub it’s a beetle larva; a smooth, pale caterpillar inside a silk case is a moth larva. Either way, the damage means active larvae are feeding on the natural fibres right now, so prompt action protects the rest of the rug from further loss.
