Why Moths Eat Wool Rugs in the First Place
The damage you see is almost never caused by the adult moth — it is done by the larvae. Clothes and carpet moth larvae feed on keratin, the protein in wool, silk and other natural fibres, which is exactly what your rug is made of. They favour dark, undisturbed spots: under furniture, against skirting boards and along the edges of a rug that rarely gets vacuumed. By the time you notice thinning pile, fraying edges or small bare patches, an infestation has usually been quietly working for months. Eggs are typically carried indoors on clothing, shoes or pets, then hatch into the fibre. This is why repair alone is never enough — if live eggs and larvae remain, the rug will simply be eaten again. Any reputable restorer treats the infestation first, then assesses what can be saved.
When a Moth-Eaten Rug Can Be Saved
The single most important factor is the foundation — the warp and weft threads that the pile is knotted onto. If the pile has been grazed away but the foundation is intact, the rug is very repairable: a weaver re-knots the missing wool by hand, matching the colour, knot type, density and direction of the surrounding field so the repair blends in. If the larvae have eaten right through to the backing, the foundation itself must be rewoven first, then the pile rebuilt on top. That is more involved but still achievable for a skilled hand-weaver. Damage to fringes or edges can usually be re-fringed, bound or overlocked. In short, very few moth-damaged wool rugs are truly beyond help — what changes is the amount of work, not whether it can be done.
Reweaving vs Replacing: Is It Worth It?
Whether to repair comes down to the rug’s value, the size of the damage and what the piece means to you. Small repairs — a few holes or worn patches — are straightforward and well worth doing on a quality wool, Persian or Oriental rug, because they preserve both appearance and value. Large-scale reweaving across big areas is more labour-intensive, so on a low-value machine-made rug it can cost more than replacement. On a handmade or antique rug, though, restoration almost always makes sense: these pieces are difficult or impossible to replace, and a quality repair protects the value rather than diminishing it.
