How Do You Repair a Hole in a Rug?
A hole in a rug is repaired by first stabilising the surrounding foundation, then either re-weaving new warp and weft threads and hand-knotting colour-matched wool to rebuild the pattern, or fitting a patch for less valuable pieces. Re-weaving makes small to medium holes almost invisible, but it is a specialist hand process best left to an experienced rug repairer.
What Causes Holes and Can They Be Fixed?
Holes in rugs come from a range of causes — moth or carpet-beetle damage that eats through wool, pets chewing or scratching, burns, dry rot in old foundations, or simple wear where the pile has worn through to the backing. The good news is that most holes can be repaired, even sizeable ones in hand-knotted Persian and Oriental rugs. What matters is the condition of the surrounding area. If the foundation around the hole is sound, a skilled repairer can rebuild it; if the rug is brittle with widespread dry rot, the repair may need to be larger or, occasionally, a section stabilised rather than fully rewoven. The only way to know for certain is to have the rug inspected. A proper assessment looks at the fibre, the weave, the size of the damage and the structural integrity of the area around it before any repair method is recommended.
Re-Weaving: Rebuilding the Rug Thread by Thread
Re-weaving is the gold-standard repair for a valuable or handmade rug, and it is a two-stage hand process. First the foundation is rebuilt: new warp and weft threads are sewn in to recreate the grid the rug was originally woven on. This step is critical — if the foundation is not laid correctly, the repair will not hold and will fail over time. Once the grid is stable, the repairer hand-knots closely colour-matched wool (or silk) yarn, using the surrounding pattern as a guide to replicate the design, density and knot count of the original. Done well, small and medium holes become almost invisible. It is painstaking, skilled work that matches dyes, knot type and pile height to the original rug, which is why it is priced case by case according to the size of the hole, the tightness of the weave and how intricate the pattern is.
Patching and Other Repair Options
Not every rug warrants full re-weaving. For machine-made rugs or pieces where the value does not justify the labour, patching is a practical and affordable alternative. A patch is a matching section cut from another rug and secured into the hole by hand-stitching, restoring the surface without the cost of knotting every thread. For damage at the edges or fringe rather than the body, re-fringing, binding or overlocking may be the right fix instead. Whatever the method, we strongly advise against DIY solutions — gluing, taping or trimming a hole at home almost always makes the problem worse and can reduce a quality rug’s value.
