What Is Rug Dusting?
Rug dusting is the first and arguably most important stage of a proper rug clean. It is the mechanical removal of dry particulate matter — dust, sand, grit, pet hair and fine debris — that has settled deep into the rug’s foundation over months or years of use. Unlike a quick vacuum, dusting reaches the base of the pile and the woven backing where soil compacts and hides. Professionals use specialist equipment that gently vibrates and agitates the rug, often delivering tens of thousands of harmonic pulses per minute, combined with compressed air to shake stubborn grit loose. The rug is typically worked from both sides so dirt is forced out rather than pushed deeper. Only once the dry soil is gone does washing begin.
