Rug specialists, not carpet cleaners

Why so many Toowoomba wool rugs come back worse, not cleaner

It is the same story every week: a carpet cleaner treated the wool rug like wall-to-wall carpet and left water stains behind. A steam wand run hot and wet over wool freshens the surface but never actually washes it, and on a delicate hand-knotted or Persian piece that is usually how the damage starts. Families tell us they did not want their rug treated like a carpet and could not find anyone who would do it properly. Old spills wick back up as the rug dries slowly in a van, the pile stays gritty underfoot, unstable dyes bleed, and on wool that kind of harm is permanent.

The risk

A carpet cleaner with a van can ruin a fine rug

One-size-fits-all carpet machines are the number one cause of rug damage. Here is exactly what goes wrong.

Water stains the last cleaner left behindA steam wand only wets the surface, then dries unevenly and rings the wool with stains the last cleaner could not lift. That is the kind of damage families come to us with after a non-specialist let them down.
Hot water that shrinks and felts the pileHot water and agitation ruin the structural integrity of the weave, shrinking and felting wool so it buckles and stiffens. Once the fibres have matted and the rug has pulled out of shape, no later clean can undo it.
That musty, stale smell that will not liftA rug pulled from storage, or one caught in a humid Toowoomba spell, holds a stale rolled-up smell deep in the foundation. Surface freshening masks it for a fortnight, then it creeps straight back the moment the weather turns.
Slow van-drying and dyes that runWool left to dry slowly in a van comes home smelling damp, and reds or tribal dyes that were never colourfast bleed into cream grounds. Hand it over looking tired and it can come back looking worse.

“The worn side was bothering me more each week, especially when the room was closed up. The wool rug had started to curl where the edge was damaged. The rug looks more finished in the room.”

Real wash, our facility
The Premier difference

Specialist care, not a quick spray

Your rug is collected and brought to our dedicated washing facility, where it is hand-assessed and cleaned by fibre, then dried under control. A deep, safe clean that protects the rug you love, backed by 29 years and a 7-day free re-wash guarantee.

Why Premier

Built to protect your rug

Wool specialists, not carpet cleaners

29 years specialising in rugs only, with IICRC-certified technicians who know how wool, Persian, Oriental and tribal pieces behave. We wash it like the family heirloom it is, never like wall-to-wall carpet, the specialist people go searching for after a bad job.

Cool, lanolin-safe hand wash, dye-tested first

Every wool rug is checked for colourfastness, then hand-washed by full immersion in controlled, lanolin-safe water, never the hot water and beater bar that shrink and felt the pile. That is how it comes back the same size, soft and colourfast, not stiff or buckled.

Free door-to-door pickup, returned fully dried

We collect the heavy rug from your Toowoomba door free and bring it back. Vans run each area on set days every week, and your rug is dried flat under control at the facility, so it comes home dry and even underfoot with no damp smell.

Honest assessment, chain of custody, guaranteed

We give you a straight answer up front on what a wash will and will not fix, and tell you if a rug is not worth cleaning. Your rug is tagged at pickup so the exact piece comes back, fully insured, non-toxic and safe for kids and pets, and backed by a 7-day free re-wash.

Good to know

Common questions

What is the best way to clean a wool rug?

A proper wool clean is a full wash, not a steam wand run over the surface in your home. Wool is dusted to lift dry grit first, then hand-washed by full immersion in cool, lanolin-safe water, rinsed thoroughly and dried flat under control. We do all of that at our dedicated Yatala facility, never in a van and never in your home, because that is the only way to flush the foundation and dry the rug properly. We collect and return it free, so the off-site part is no hassle.

Will water ruin a wool rug, or make it shrink?

Water itself does not ruin wool, but the wrong method does. Shrinkage, felting and water stains come from hot water, harsh detergent and scrubbing, which is exactly what a carpet steam wand does. We use none of that. Your rug is washed by hand in controlled, lanolin-safe water, with the colours checked for fastness first, then dried flat under control. Done that way, wool comes back the same size, soft and even underfoot, not stiff or buckled.

What are the common mistakes when cleaning a wool rug?

The big ones are hot water and steam, harsh carpet detergents that strip the lanolin and leave the pile dry and scratchy, scrubbing or a beater bar that frays and felts the fibres, skipping colourfastness testing so dyes bleed, and slow drying that traps a musty smell or lets old spills wick back to the surface. Our whole process is built to avoid every one of those, which is why we are a wool specialist and not a general carpet cleaner.

What are the disadvantages of a wool rug, and how do you care for them?

Wool needs more care than synthetics: it holds the lanolin that keeps it soft, so harsh cleaning strips it dry, and it can shrink or felt if washed hot or scrubbed. It also traps fine dust and odour deep in the pile. None of that is a problem with the right method. We dust it dry, hand-wash cool, test the dyes and dry it flat, so the qualities that make wool harder to clean at home are exactly what we are set up to handle.

What is the lifespan of a wool rug, and how do I know cleaning is worth it?

A good wool rug can last decades, often generations, and is usually worth far more than the cost of a fresh clean. Professional washing every one to two years protects that life by flushing out the grit that cuts the fibres and the odour that sets in the foundation. We quote each rug free by size, fibre and condition, and give you an honest assessment, including telling you if a rug is past saving, so you never pay to clean something not worth it. Bring more than one and save $20 off each additional rug.
