Why wool rugs come back ruined from a carpet clean
You did not want it treated like a carpet, but that is exactly what happened. The way most people find us is the same story: "the last two carpet cleaners have left water stains." A carpet cleaner runs a hot wand over the surface, leaves the rug damp and calls it done. Heat and scrubbing felt and shrink wool so it never lies flat again, the surface dries unevenly and leaves tide marks, and the musty smell sitting deep in the foundation comes straight back once the humid Northern NSW air gets to it. A wool rug is not the sort of thing a carpet cleaner can properly clean. It needs a cool, full-immersion hand-wash that flushes the whole rug and dries it right through.
A carpet cleaner with a van can ruin a fine rug
One-size-fits-all carpet machines are the number one cause of rug damage. Here is exactly what goes wrong.

Specialist care, not a quick spray
Your rug is collected and brought to our dedicated washing facility, where it is hand-assessed and cleaned by fibre, then dried under control. A deep, safe clean that protects the rug you love, backed by 29 years and a 7-day free re-wash guarantee.
Built to protect your rug
We never use hot water, a beater bar or a wand. Every wool rug is tested for dye and colour fastness, then gently hand-washed by full immersion in controlled cool water with a fibre-correct, pH-balanced detergent at our dedicated Yatala facility, never in a van and never in your home.
Free door-to-door pickup and delivery right across Northern NSW, with no extra charge for the distance. Drying is part of the job, not an afterthought, so your rug comes back fully dried with no damp smell waiting when it goes back down.
Our IICRC-certified technicians read fibre, foundation, fringe and dye on every rug, including older hand-knotted and sentimental wool pieces, and give you an honest assessment of what the wash can and cannot achieve before any water touches it.
Non-toxic, pet and child safe products, full insurance and a clear chain of custody, with your rug tagged at pickup so the exact piece comes back to you. Every wash is backed by a 7-day free re-wash guarantee on top of your Australian Consumer Law rights.

Common questions
What is the best way to clean a wool rug?
A full-immersion cool-water hand-wash, not a surface steam or wand. Wool needs to be flushed right through, washed with a fibre-correct, pH-balanced detergent, then dried fully so moisture does not sit in the foundation. We dye-test first, hand-wash by immersion at our Yatala facility and return it fully dried. Steam may freshen a rug, but it does not actually clean wool the way immersion does. Call 1800 655 949 for a quote.
Will water ruin a wool rug?
Hot water will, and so will scrubbing, because heat and agitation are what shrink and felt wool. Water itself does not, as long as it is controlled cool water, a gentle hand process and proper drying afterwards. That is the whole difference between how we wash and how a carpet wand works. We test every rug for colour fastness before it touches water, wash by full immersion and dry it right through, so it comes back soft and lying flat.
What are the common mistakes when cleaning wool rugs?
The big ones are hot water, harsh chemistry, a beater bar or wand, scrubbing at stains, and leaving the rug damp. Hot water and agitation felt the pile, scrubbing pushes stains deeper and frays the wool, and poor drying leaves tide marks and a musty smell. We avoid all of it with a cool, controlled hand-wash and full drying, which is exactly why people come to us after a generic carpet clean has gone wrong.
What are the disadvantages of a wool rug?
Wool is sensitive to heat and rough handling, it holds moisture deep in the pile so it needs proper drying, and it can attract dust and traffic grime that vacuuming alone will not reach. The upside is that wool is built to last decades, and a correct professional wash every one to two years brings the pile and colour back rather than wearing it out, which is why a good rug is worth caring for.
