Will water ruin a wool rug?

We colourfast dye-test every colour before any water touches the rug, use controlled water rather than hot steam, and dry under controlled conditions so the weave stays sound.
What are the common mistakes when cleaning wool rugs?
The big ones are hot water that felts and shrinks the fibres, scrubbing that frays the pile and pushes stains deeper, skipping a colourfast test so reds bleed into cream, and slow drying that locks in a musty smell.
