Rug specialists, not carpet cleaners

Why a wool rug needs a wool specialist, not a carpet truck

Most people find us after being burned. They come in saying the last carpet cleaner left water stains that would not lift, usually after a generic cleaner treated a delicate rug like wall-to-wall synthetic. Others come because the lounge rug picked up a musty rolled-up smell in storage, or the wool feels rough and gritty underfoot after years of pet and toddler grime. A steam wand run over the surface freshens the top and does not actually clean the rug. Wool is not carpet, and washing it properly takes a completely different method.

The risk

A carpet cleaner with a van can ruin a fine rug

One-size-fits-all carpet machines are the number one cause of rug damage. Here is exactly what goes wrong.

Treated like ordinary carpetHand a hand-knotted or Persian wool rug to a general carpet cleaner and you risk the classic horror story: water stains left to dry in, fibres felted, and a sentimental rug that comes back smaller and stiffer than it left.
Hot steam shrinks and felts the weaveHot water is what shrinks wool and ruins the structural integrity of the weave. A steam wand can felt the pile so the rug returns rippled, buckled and a size smaller, with damage no rinse can undo.
Dyes bleed into the ivoryWithout a colourfast test first, the non-colourfast reds in vegetable-dyed and Persian wool run straight into the pale ivory and cream. One pass of the wrong water and the pattern is bled forever.
Musty smell locked in, grit left deepA surface steam dried too slowly traps the stale storage smell deeper instead of lifting it. And vacuuming never reaches the grit ground into the base, so the pile stays rough, dull and grey underfoot.

“We kept noticing the frayed tassels whenever we walked past the rug. Our vacuum had pulled at the frayed tassels on the wool rug. The fringe no longer catches your eye for the wrong reason.”

Real wash, our facility
The Premier difference

Specialist care, not a quick spray

Your rug is collected and brought to our dedicated washing facility, where it is hand-assessed and cleaned by fibre, then dried under control. A deep, safe clean that protects the rug you love, backed by 29 years and a 7-day free re-wash guarantee.

Why Premier

Built to protect your rug

Rug-only specialist, never carpets

We have washed rugs only for 29 years, never carpets, which out-positions any carpet cleaner adding rugs on the side. Your wool rug is identified, dye-tested and hand-washed by the method that fibre needs, not steamed on the floor.

Full immersion hand-wash, never hot steam

We fully submerge your rug in controlled water at our Yatala facility, never hot steam extraction that felts wool. This flushes the grit, grime and stale odour from deep in the base, so it comes home genuinely fresh and soft underfoot, not masked.

Free pickup, delivery and full drying

You never lift or transport a heavy wet rug. We collect from your Brisbane door and return free, dried under controlled conditions in our facility, so drying is handled properly and it comes back with no damp or musty smell.

IICRC-certified, insured, honest from the first call

Our technicians are IICRC-certified and every rug is tagged at pickup with a clear chain of custody, so your exact rug comes back to you. Fully insured collection to return, colourfast dye-tested, and an honest call up front, even if a rug is not worth cleaning.

Good to know

Common questions

What is the best way to clean a wool rug?

A full immersion hand-wash by a rug specialist, not a steam wand over the surface. Wool needs controlled water, gentle pH-balanced cleaning, no scrubbing and no beater bar, then proper controlled drying within a day so the smell never sets back in. That is the only thing we have done for 29 years, at our Yatala facility rather than on your floor, where we can dust, wash, rinse and dry it the way the fibre actually needs.

Will water ruin a wool rug?

Hot water will, the wrong way. Hot steam extraction shrinks and felts wool and runs the dyes, which is why most damaged rugs we see came from a carpet cleaner using heat. Water at the right temperature in trained hands is exactly how wool has been washed for centuries. We colourfast dye-test every colour before any water touches the rug, use controlled water rather than hot steam, and dry under controlled conditions so the weave stays sound.

What are the common mistakes when cleaning wool rugs?

The big ones are hot water that felts and shrinks the fibres, scrubbing that frays the pile and pushes stains deeper, skipping a colourfast test so reds bleed into cream, and slow drying that locks in a musty smell. The biggest of all is handing wool to a general carpet cleaner who treats it like synthetic carpet. We avoid every one of these by dye-testing first, hand-washing in controlled water, and drying properly in our facility.

What are the disadvantages of a wool rug?

Wool holds dust and grit deep in the pile, can smell musty if it gets damp or is rolled away in storage, and is genuinely unforgiving if cleaned with heat or harsh chemicals, it shrinks, felts and bleeds. The upside is huge: properly cared for, wool is naturally soft, hard-wearing and long-lived. A professional immersion wash every year or two lifts the trapped grit and odour those disadvantages create and keeps the rug fresh for decades.

What is the lifespan of a wool rug?

A good wool rug can last decades, and a fine hand-knotted one can be handed down for generations, but only if the grit ground into the base is washed out periodically rather than left to cut the fibres every time you walk on it. A professional immersion clean every year or two adds years to its life. A proper wash costs far less than replacing the rug, which is why most of ours are sentimental pieces people intend to keep.
