Rug specialists, not carpet cleaners

Why viscose marks and goes brown, and why most cleaning makes it worse

The thing every viscose owner needs to hear is simple: water is the enemy. Spill a glass of water and the silky pile can mark the moment it gets wet, the effect owners describe as a rug that turned terrible after nothing more than plain water. Viscose is a cellulosic fibre that loses much of its strength when wet, so the cellulose oxidises and wicks a yellow or brown stain to the surface, the mark cleaners call cellulosic browning. Add steam, beater-bar agitation or standard carpet chemistry and you flatten the sheen and trigger the very browning you feared. Viscose can be cleaned. It just cannot be cleaned like a normal rug.

The risk

A carpet cleaner with a van can ruin a fine rug

One-size-fits-all carpet machines are the number one cause of rug damage. Here is exactly what goes wrong.

Yellow-brown water marksToo much water or slow drying lets the cellulose oxidise and wick brown stains to the surface. Left untreated this browning often sets permanently, ruining a rug that was otherwise fine.
Crushed, crunchy pileHeavy agitation or steam flattens the silky sheen you paid for and leaves the rug feeling like cardboard, with thin strands popping up where the pile used to lie flat.
Colour bleed and bleeding dyesViscose dyes run easily once wet, so an untested wash can let dark colours bleed into light ground, dulling high-traffic lanes and leaving streaks that no second clean removes.
DIY marks that set hardBrushing, blotting hard or reaching for a home machine on a soaked rug presses water and stains deeper into the foundation. Many rugs sold as wool secretly contain viscose, so the wrong hands set the damage for good.

“The art silk rug had light staining, and I wanted someone careful with it. It came back cleaner while still looking like the same old rug. The light staining does not stand out the way it did.”

The Premier difference

Specialist care, not a quick spray

Your rug is collected and brought to our dedicated washing facility, where it is hand-assessed and cleaned by fibre, then dried under control. A deep, safe clean that protects the rug you love, backed by 29 years and a 7-day free re-wash guarantee.

Why Premier

Built to protect your rug

Viscose specialists, not a carpet crew

29 years cleaning rugs only, with IICRC-certified technicians who identify viscose, rayon, art silk and bamboo silk on sight and explain why it browns. Real specialist knowledge, not a van offering to steam it.

Controlled hand-wash, never steam

Full-immersion hand-washing at our Yatala plant with low, controlled moisture, controlled drying and gentle hand-grooming to lift the pile and restore the sheen. Never the steam or beater-bar agitation that wrecks viscose.

Your rug is tagged at pickup and returned to your door dry, the exact rug you handed over. Free pickup and delivery across South East QLD and Northern NSW, with non-toxic, pet and child safe products and a real person on the phone.

Good to know

Common questions

Can a viscose rug be washed?

Yes, but not the way a normal rug is. Most cleaners refuse viscose because it weakens and marks when it gets too wet. We accept it. Our IICRC-certified technicians identify the fibre, dye-test for colour-fastness, then use a controlled low-moisture hand-wash with anti-browning chemistry and controlled drying at our Yatala facility, never standard carpet equipment, steam or beater-bar agitation.

Why is 100% viscose dry clean only?

Because the labels are written for the risk, not the result. Viscose loses much of its strength when wet, so makers warn against water to avoid browning and crushing. The honest truth is that water-based cleaning is fine when it is done right: controlled moisture, the correct acidic chemistry, fast controlled drying and no aggressive agitation. That is exactly the specialist hand-wash we run, which is why we can safely clean rugs the label calls dry clean only.

Why is viscose hard to clean?

Because water is the enemy. Viscose loses much of its strength once wet, so any scrubbing or steam damages it, and a simple spill can trigger cellulosic browning, the yellow or brown mark that appears after a clean. Safe cleaning needs controlled moisture, the right acidity and controlled drying, a genuine specialist process. Never let anyone steam clean your viscose rug.

Can viscose carpet get wet?

Only under careful control. A plain water spill is enough to crush the pile and start a brown mark, which is why home cleaning so often makes things worse. If it gets wet, blot gently, do not rub, do not add more water, and call us. In our facility we manage exactly how much moisture the fibre takes and how fast it dries, which is how we wash viscose without the browning a sponge and bucket cause at home.

My pet had an accident on it, is the rug ruined and will the smell come back?

Not necessarily, and the sooner we see it the better your odds. Blot gently now, do not rub or add water, and call us. Urine soaks into the foundation, so a surface spray only hides it while our full immersion reaches the backing where the smell lives. We use non-toxic, pet and child safe products and give you an honest view of what the treatment can achieve before we start.

Stop the damage, then let us assess it free

First, stop adding water, blot do not rub, and skip any DIY cleaning. Then call Premier Rug Cleaning on 1800 655 949 for free pickup and delivery anywhere in Toowoomba, so you never risk handling a fragile, valuable rug yourself.
