Common questions
Can a viscose rug actually be washed, or is it dry clean only?
It can be washed, but only by the right method, which is why it is so often labelled dry clean only. Surface water, scrubbing and slow drying cause yellow-brown marks and crush the pile. We avoid all of that: our IICRC-certified technicians identify the fibre first, then use a controlled low-moisture hand-wash with an acidic anti-browning treatment and rapid face-down drying, a completely different process from a generic rug or carpet clean.
Why is viscose hard to clean, and why should I never steam it?
Viscose is regenerated cellulose, so when it gets wet it can lose up to 70% of its strength. That means any scrubbing, flooding or steam risks crushing the pile and triggering cellulosic browning, the yellow-brown water mark owners dread. A real specialist never steam-cleans viscose. We use controlled low-moisture hand-washing instead, with measured water and fast drying that protect the weakened wet fibre.
Can a viscose rug get wet at all without being damaged?
Not safely at home, which is the heart of the problem. Uncontrolled moisture wicks colour to the surface and weakens the fibre, so even a clean glass of water can leave a brown halo. The fibre can be wetted, but only with controlled moisture, the right acidity and rapid face-down drying, handled by people who know the failure mode before they begin. That controlled environment is exactly what our Yatala facility is built for.
My viscose rug got wet and there is a yellow or brown mark. Can you fix it?
Often yes, and the sooner the better. That mark is cellulosic browning, where moisture wicks colour to the surface as the rug dries. We treat it with an acidic anti-browning process and controlled, rapid drying, the opposite of the at-home soaking or steaming that caused it. We will tell you honestly how much we expect to lift before we begin, because no honest cleaner can promise every old mark will vanish.
How long will a viscose rug last, and is mine worth cleaning?
Viscose is a delicate fibre by nature, but cared for correctly a rug can stay beautiful for years, and a proper clean often adds life by removing the grit and moisture damage that wear it down. At pickup we assess yours honestly and quote by size, fibre and condition. If it is genuinely not worth cleaning we will say so.
