Common questions
Can I power wash or machine wash a Turkish rug?
No, and please do not try it at home. A pressure washer or a washing machine is far too harsh for a hand-knotted Turkish rug: it can felt the wool, split the foundation, shred the fringe and run the natural dyes. The only safe method is a controlled full immersion hand-wash where the dyes are tested for colourfastness first and the rug is dried flat. That is exactly what we do by hand at our Yatala facility, never a machine and never a high-pressure blast.
How do you clean a Turkish Oushak rug?
An Oushak is treated as an individual heirloom. We inspect the fibres, test the older natural dyes for fastness, then give it a gentle full immersion hand-wash and dry it flat so nothing sets or runs, never a hot steam that can set the colours. It is tagged and tracked the whole time, so the exact Oushak you handed us is the one returned, washed the careful way a handmade rug needs.
How long does a Turkish rug last, and is cleaning worth it?
Looked after properly, a quality hand-knotted Turkish rug can last for generations and outlast most of your furniture, which is exactly why a proper wash every few years beats replacing it. The thing that shortens its life is harsh home scrubbing or a machine, not a careful hand-wash. If yours is an inexpensive machine-made rug we will tell you honestly whether cleaning is worth it before you spend a cent.
Will the wash get rid of the musty storage smell, or just cover it?
It removes it rather than masks it. A surface steam only freshens the top, but our full immersion hand-wash flushes water right through the pile and foundation and carries the embedded dust and stale stored odour out with it. A Turkish rug that came out of storage smelling too stale for the house comes back neutral and fresh enough to lay straight back down.
I made a stain worse by rubbing it. Can you still help?
Often yes, and we will be honest about it. Rubbing a tea, wine or juice spill with a towel pushes it deeper, so we check the fibres first and treat the mark carefully rather than promise a miracle. The realistic result is usually a clear improvement where the mark is much lighter and no longer catches your eye. We tell you what stain removal can achieve before we start, never after.
