Can I power wash a Turkish rug?
No. A pressure washer batters the hand-knotted foundation, frays the fringes and forces natural dyes to bleed into the lighter field, and there is no undoing it. A Turkish rug needs a gentle full-immersion hand-wash with the dyes colourfastness-tested first and the water kept cool. That is the only method we use at our Yatala facility.
Can you machine wash a Turkish rug?
No, and that is exactly how hand-knotted rugs get ruined. An automated machine or household washer felts the wool, shrinks the foundation and crushes the pile. We hand-wash every rug instead, reading wool from silk and washing gently to suit the fibre, so your rug is treated as an individual heirloom rather than run through a batch process.
How do you clean a Turkish Oushak rug?
We inspect the rug, identify the fibre and dye-test for colourfastness before any water touches it, then immersion hand-wash it cool by hand and dry it flat in a controlled room. That gentle process suits an Oushak, a fine silk piece or an old wool rug alike, protecting the soft natural palette and the foundation. We never steam or scrub it like a carpet.
How long does a Turkish carpet last?
