Can synthetic rugs be cleaned, or is it cheaper to just replace it?
Yes, synthetics clean up beautifully, and they are our most affordable rug type to wash, so cleaning almost always beats replacing on cost. Can you professionally clean a polyester rug?
Yes. Polyester, polypropylene, nylon and olefin are all safely hand-washed at our Yatala facility. We identify the fibre, test for colour-fastness, then immerse, rinse and dry the whole rug right through the backing under controlled conditions. Synthetics are durable and respond very well to a proper wash, far better than to the surface treatment most people try at home first.
Can you steam clean a synthetic rug?
We do something more thorough than steam. Steam and in-home sprays only treat the top and can leave moisture trapped in the backing, which is the number one cause of a musty smell on synthetics. Instead your rug is fully immersed and hand-washed, rinsed right through, then dried front, back and through the backing under controlled conditions so it comes back fresh and never damp underfoot.
Can you machine wash a 100% polyester rug?
Please do not put it in a household washing machine, as the agitation and spin can distort the backing, fray edges and set creases you cannot get out. We hand-wash by full immersion, never in an automated machine, so the fibres and backing are cleaned deeply without the damage a domestic machine causes. What if my rug is actually viscose, not synthetic, and gets ruined?
