What is the best way to clean a silk rug?
Cool, gentle, full-immersion hand washing by a specialist, not steam or carpet methods. That reaches the grit deep in the foundation without swelling the fibres, running the dyes or flattening the sheen, so it comes back refreshed rather than over-cleaned.
Can you steam clean a silk rug?
You should not, and we never do. Steam and hot-water extraction push heat well above body temperature into delicate silk, which swells the fibres, can set or bleed the natural dyes and leaves the rug stiff and dull. That heat is the single biggest cause of the silk horror stories you read online. We hand-wash in cool controlled water instead, with no steam, no beater bars and no aggressive heat-drying.
Can silk rugs be vacuumed?
Lightly and carefully, yes, but a vacuum barely scratches the surface. The dirt that dulls a silk rug is the fine grit ground deep into the foundation, which is why a 'clean-looking' rug can release astonishing amounts of dirt once it is properly washed. Use gentle suction with no rotating beater bar at home, and leave the deep clean to full immersion, which actually flushes that grit out.
Can I hand wash a silk rug myself at home?
We would gently steer you away from it. Silk reacts badly to the wrong water temperature, and the most common way rugs arrive damaged is a careful owner dabbing a spill, which spreads the mark and sets it deeper. Colours can bleed and edges can shrink without dye-testing and controlled drying. If a stain has already happened, stop, leave it dry and let us inspect it first.
