Common questions
What is the best way to clean a silk rug?
By full immersion hand-washing in controlled water at a proper facility, by people who do only rugs. The fibre is dye-tested for colourfastness first, gently flushed with non-toxic products, then dried under controlled conditions so the sheen and knots stay intact. Avoid steam, hot water, harsh agitation and home remedies entirely. At Premier this is the only way we wash silk, at our Yatala plant, never in a van. Phone 1800 655 949.
Can you steam clean a silk rug?
No, and you should not let anyone try. The hot water and pressure used on ordinary carpet can scald the fibre, dull the sheen and weaken the knots, and once that soft lustre is cooked out of silk it does not come back. That is why a carpet wand only ever freshens a silk rug for a week or two rather than truly cleaning it. We do the opposite: a gentle hand-wash by immersion in controlled water, no aggressive heat near your rug.
Can silk rugs be vacuumed?
Gently, yes, but with real care. Use suction only, with no rotating beater bar or brush head, as the spinning bristles snag and fray delicate silk and pull at the knots. Light, low-suction passes in the direction of the pile are safest for regular dust. For anything deeper than surface dust, a controlled facility wash is what actually lifts the embedded grit, since a clean-looking silk rug often holds far more grime than you would believe.
Can I hand wash a silk rug at home?
We do not recommend it. Home washing is one of the most common ways silk gets damaged: tap water, the wrong products, uncontrolled drying and rubbing all set dyes, cause bleeding and leave permanent rings and watermarks. Silk needs colourfastness testing, controlled water temperature and proper drying that a bathroom cannot give it. If you have already had a go and made a mark worse, you are far from the first, and it is usually still fixable, so bring it to us before doing anything else.
