From your front door to our Yatala facility and safely back again. This is the real process, not a quick spray.
Everyone said no, or only freshened it
You have rung around and heard the same answer every time: no, silk is too high-risk. Many owners tell us every cleaner they called turned a genuine silk rug away. Or you let a carpet steamer have a go and it only freshened the rug rather than truly cleaning it. Maybe you tried a soft cloth on a stain yourself, gently blotting as the internet advised, and watched the mark spread instead. Now a piece worth thousands, often inherited or carried home from travel, sits rolled up because you are frightened the next attempt will ruin it for good.
A carpet cleaner with a van can ruin a fine rug
One-size-fits-all carpet machines are the number one cause of rug damage. Here is exactly what goes wrong.

Specialist care, not a quick spray
Your rug is collected and brought to our dedicated washing facility, where it is hand-assessed and cleaned by fibre, then dried under control. A deep, safe clean that protects the rug you love, backed by 29 years and a free re-wash guarantee.
Built to protect your rug
While the cleaners you rang refuse silk for being too risky, we accept it as everyday work. Genuine 100% silk, art silk and viscose, antique or modern, washed by IICRC-certified technicians who specialise in rugs, not carpets.
The opposite of the carpet method you dread: gentle controlled washing by full immersion at our dedicated Yatala facility, never in a van and never in-home, with slow careful drying that protects the sheen rather than flattening it.
We identify the fibre, dye-test for colour-fastness, and give you the likely result and the price before any water touches the rug, including a frank word if an old stain may only lighten. No surprises, ever.
Your irreplaceable silk is inspected at pickup with a clear chain of custody and stays covered the whole time it is in our care, so a fragile heirloom is never crammed into your own car boot.

Common questions
What is the best way to clean a silk rug?
Properly, the only safe method is gentle hand-washing by full immersion in cool, controlled water, with the fibre identified and dye-tested first. That is what a genuine rug specialist does and what a carpet cleaner cannot. We do the full process at our Yatala facility, never in a van, then dry it slowly under controlled conditions so the sheen and hand-feel are preserved. Call 1800 655 949 for free pickup.
Can you steam clean a silk rug?
No, silk should never be hot-water steamed. Steam above roughly 29 degrees can permanently flatten the sheen and weaken the weave, which is why a carpet steamer only freshens a rug rather than truly cleaning it. Ground-in grit needs full immersion to lift, not a wand passed over the top. We hand-wash in cool, controlled water instead, never with a steam wand or beater bar.
Can silk rugs be vacuumed?
Gentle vacuuming with the beater bar switched off, or using just the suction nozzle, is fine for surface dust between professional cleans. Never use a rotating brush head, which can pull and fray delicate silk pile. Vacuuming alone cannot reach the grit ground deep in the foundation, though, so a full immersion hand-wash every couple of years is what keeps a silk rug truly clean and lustrous.
Can I hand wash a silk rug myself at home?
We honestly do not recommend it. Silk and art silk lose strength when wet, dyes can bleed without a colour-fastness test first, and uneven drying leaves watermarks or browning. Many owners ring us after a DIY attempt made a stain worse. We dye-test, wash in controlled cool water and dry under controlled conditions, then back it with a free re-wash guarantee, so you are not risking an irreplaceable piece.
How long does a silk rug last, and how do I protect it?
A well-made silk rug can last generations if it is cared for correctly. The fastest way to shorten its life is hot-water steam, harsh chemicals or DIY rubbing that breaks the fibres. Keep it out of direct sun, vacuum gently, deal with spills by blotting rather than rubbing, and have it professionally hand-washed periodically. We collect, wash and return it soft and intact, with slow controlled drying to protect the weave.
