What's the best way to clean a shaggy rug?
Honestly, the best way is full immersion hand-washing off-site, not a machine or a steam over the top. Long pile traps grit, dander and urine down at the backing, and only soaking and flushing the whole rug reaches it, then drying it slowly and flat brings the loft back. A home machine or beater bar tends to mat the pile or tear fibres loose, so for a valued shag it is genuinely a specialist job.
How do you make a shaggy rug fluffy again?
Matted, clumped pile usually comes from soil packed deep in the loft and from being cleaned or dried wrong. We wash by full immersion to lift that soil out from the base, then groom and dry the rug under controlled conditions so the fibres stand back up.
