What's the best way to clean a shaggy rug?

The best way is a full immersion hand-wash that flushes the entire pile and backing, followed by slow, controlled drying so the loft lifts back up. How do you make a shaggy rug fluffy again?
Usually we can. We never use a beater bar or harsh agitation that tears and flattens the long fibres. Instead we immersion hand-wash, rinse out every trace of detergent so nothing is left to stiffen the pile, dry slowly under controlled conditions, then groom the rug at the end so the loft lifts. It comes back soft and fluffy rather than clumped and crusty.
How do you clean a shaggy rug at home, and why not just shampoo or machine-wash it myself?
