Rug specialists, not carpet cleaners

Why the musty smell keeps coming back after you thought you had dealt with it

If you are searching for rug mould removal in Toowoomba, you have probably already tried something. The 50/50 hot water and vinegar. The baking soda. Dragging it out into the sun. Maybe a wash that smelled fine for a fortnight, then turned musty again the moment you rolled it back out. The reason it returns is almost always the same: sprays and in-home steam only touch what you can smell on top, while living mould stays down in the backing and foundation. In our humid South East QLD climate a damp rug can begin to mould within 24 to 48 hours, and once it takes hold it keeps feeding while the rug sits on your floor. Masking the odour does not make it gone. Flushing the mould out of the foundation and drying the rug right through is the only thing that does, and proper drying is the part almost everyone skips.

The risk

A carpet cleaner with a van can ruin a fine rug

One-size-fits-all carpet machines are the number one cause of rug damage. Here is exactly what goes wrong.

The musty smell takes over the whole roomA damp, mouldy rug makes the whole room smell stale, so you stop using it, roll it up, or leave it outside. The moment you put it back down, that musty smell is the first thing you and your visitors notice all over again.
It might be the dangerous black kindIf you have read that black mould can be hazardous, that worry is fair. Mould can affect the air in a room, and disturbing it yourself at home risks spreading spores through the space instead of removing them, which is exactly the opposite of what you want.
Too bulky and risky to deal with yourselfA damp, mouldy rug is heavy, awkward and often fragile. Nobody wants to fold it into the back of the car and spread spores through the boot, and a careless DIY scrub on wool or silk can bleed the dyes and damage a piece you cannot replace.
It keeps spreading the longer it waitsWhile a mouldy rug sits rolled in the shed or garage, it can spread to the floor underneath and to anything stored against it. On wool or silk, the longer it stays damp the harder the smell and marks are to lift, so every week of waiting eats into the chance of saving it.

“The hallway runner picked up a musty smell after a humid spell. It now smells clean without a strong deodoriser smell. The clean was enough to make us stop talking about replacing it.”

Real wash, our facility
The Premier difference

Specialist care, not a quick spray

Your rug is collected and brought to our dedicated washing facility, where it is hand-assessed and cleaned by fibre, then dried under control. A deep, safe clean that protects the rug you love, backed by 29 years and a free re-wash guarantee.

Why Premier

Built to protect your rug

Full immersion flushes the mould from the source

We submerge and hand-wash the whole rug at our dedicated Yatala facility, so the mould is flushed out of the backing and foundation, not just lifted off the surface. This is the deep clean a spray, a wipe or an automated machine simply cannot reach.

We dry it right through so it cannot regrow

Recurrence is almost always a drying failure, so we dry your rug completely under controlled conditions, never in a van. It is the single thing happy customers credit most: it comes back dry and ready to lay down, with no damp smell waiting to return, and a free re-wash guarantee if you are not happy.

Safe products, fibre-correct, no scare-selling

We wash with non-toxic products that are safe around children and pets, and dye and colour-fastness test every wool, silk or handmade piece first. We contain the mould off-site so the spores leave your home, and we will never frighten you into work your rug does not need.

Free pickup the mould specialists do not offer

The mould and restoration crews around here sell call-outs and emergency response, but none come and take the mouldy rug away for free. We collect from your door across South East QLD and Northern NSW, tag it at pickup, and bring your exact rug back, so it is out of your house today.

Mould issue handled in Fernvale
The room felt stale because of the damp smell in the jute rug. I liked that they talked about drying as much as cleaning. We were comfortable putting it back down straight away. I was glad we did not have to replace it.

A fresh woven rug after the pet accident in Kearneys Spring
Our dog had one accident on the woven rug, but it was enough to make the whole room smell off. Premier treated it properly and the odour is gone. We are in Kearneys Spring, so having it collected made the job much easier. I liked that the advice was honest before the work started.

Musty smell gone in Jondaryan
Our large area rug had been against a damp wall and started smelling musty. They collected it from Jondaryan and explained the mould cleaning process clearly. A couple of faint marks remain, but the rug feels much healthier.

Off-site clean helped in Nathan
After a few years in the main room, the Oriental rug needed a proper wash rather than another quick vacuum. The collection made sense because the rug was too bulky for my car. It came back dry, clean and ready to put straight down. That small change made the room feel cleaner overall.

Good help with old stains in St Lucia
The Moroccan rug had reached the point where spot cleaning was not enough. The old stains are much softer now, and the colours look cleaner in daylight. It was an easy result to be happy with. The St Lucia pickup was handled well.

Good to know

Common questions

Can a mouldy rug actually be saved, or is it already ruined?

Often it can be saved, and we will tell you the truth before you spend a cent. Many rugs that feel like a write-off come good once the mould is flushed from the backing and the piece is dried right through. The ones genuinely past saving are usually where the foundation has dry-rotted and the rug feels crunchy or knocks when you bend it. After 29 years we assess yours honestly, so you never pour money into a lost cause or bin a rug that could have been rescued.

What kills mould in rugs and gets the musty smell out for good?

Full immersion hand-washing at our facility, followed by controlled drying. Vinegar, baking soda and the sun kill what is on top and leave the roots alive underneath, so it regrows within weeks. We submerge the whole rug so the mould is flushed from the backing and foundation, then dry it completely so there is no trapped damp left to feed regrowth. Removing the source and drying it through is the only thing a home remedy cannot do.

Can you get mould out of a rug, including the black kind?

Yes, and it is reasonable to be cautious about black mould. Rather than disturbing it in your home, where spores can spread through the room, we collect the rug and treat and contain the contamination off-site at our Yatala facility. The whole rug is immersion-washed to lift mould from the backing, then dried fully and returned washed in non-toxic products that are safe around your children and pets once it is back home.

How common is mould under a rug after water or humidity?

Very common here. Mould is almost always a symptom of a water event, a leak under a door, rain in a corner, slab moisture or a long humid spell, and in our climate a damp rug can begin to mould within 24 to 48 hours. If your rug was wet from heavy rain or stored away too long, treat it sooner rather than later. We document the rug at pickup and can supply the records you need for an insurer on a water-damaged piece.

Can a local carpet cleaner just steam this in my home?

A surface steam clean and proper rug-mould removal are different jobs. In-home or truck-mount steam works on top and pushes moisture deeper into the foundation, which is the number one reason the musty smell comes back. We immersion hand-wash the whole rug at our facility, then dry it under controlled conditions. That difference, full immersion and proper drying versus a damp surface steam, is the difference between the smell being masked and the mould being gone.
